I don't see it as such a huge loss, it's not like they really developed anything, they just assembled hardware that was designed by nvidia. There's plenty of other people doing the same thing. 3DFX getting bought out was MUCH bigger news.

One article states that VisionTek is "folding" and everyone believes it without any hard evidence or word from VisionTek. I've got a bridge I'll sell to you for $15. :)

I don't think so. By that logic, Voodoo5 5500's should be going for upwards of $600. I was lucky to get $50 from selling mine! ;)

Some cards actually are collector's items, though.

You know, when I originally heard what 3dfx was going to do with their voodoo 5 6000 I thought to myself "Self, that is the single most retarded idea anyone has ever come up with. Let's sell a video card that has to be plugged into the wall 'cause it can't get enough juice from the system's power supply!" Now when I took a look at that link I thought the same exact thing.

WTF were they thinking to make a video card with an external power supply?

Yeah I got that Ti200 GF3 for $99 Day after turkey day. I cant really complain I guess- already got my rebates and stuff. Sad to see a good company like this fold.

You can say that again.

You know.. I was blown away when I found out that the company was based in Gurnee, IL right across I94 from Six Flags Great America. I wondered how they could afford to make something like computer parts and be competetive after paying an American work staff. It appears that they were making plans to take their production overseas before they went kaput. Guess they were a little late.

Sorry to see them go.

from ardocp.com:

UPDATE!

VisionTek has responded this afternoon (Monday, August 19, 2002) with the following statment.

Here is our official statement in reaction to HardOCP.com's recent post:

"An Assignee / Trustee has been appointed, and will attempt to maximize the value of the company's assets. His belief is that the assets have a higher value as a "turn-key" operation than in a liquidation. The Trustee is continuing to operate the company to determine if a sale is a viable alternative to a liquidation, and he is currently talking to interested parties. The company is continuing to take orders, ship products, and honor rebates."

Nvidia stock didn't go down too much in after-hour trading.

Currently at $12.85

Wonder what it's going to do tomorrow

Oh man!! That's horrible news... how does the best nVidia cardmaker die off, and those crappy little other generic companies are still around like 'Colorama' or 'eFX' or something like that? I just ordered a VisionTek GeForce2 GTS-V card this afternoon. Not worried about support, as thankfully all nVidia drivers will work for it as long as nVidia is around.

Good point I just thought of, folks- don't worry about buying their products still! They will still be supported by the chipset manufacturer- nVidia.
