Here is what Visioneer told me about XP and Paper Port. Note they tell you to download the current XP driver, but as I read this do not tell you when or how to install it vis-a-vie the installation of paperport. (note Step 8). Sorry this is long, but it might help someone. My scanner is not going to arrive for 3 more days, so if someone can try this and let us know, GREAT:
<< Dear Jeffery,
Thank you for writing Visioneer Technical Support.
Based on the information provided, we understand that you have an issue with
regard to your scanner.
May we inform you that the scanner may work to your Windows
XP system, provided you try to follow the suggestions below:
1. Uninstall PaperPort from the computer by clicking on the Windows "Start"
button and selecting "Control Panel" and then double clicking on the
"Add/Remove Programs" icon. In this Window, select the Visioneer Paperport
Program and click on "Change/Remove". Follow the on screen instructions.
2. Repeat the above steps to remove the scanner driver. Usually called
Visioneer One Touch v.2.x or 3.x).
3. After the uninstall is complete restart the computer.
If you have the Screen Saver feature or Antivirus program turned on, we
recommend it be turned off prior to proceeding with the installation. This
can be done, by pressing the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys on the keyboard and then
click on the "Applications" tab. Highlight an item, by single clicking on
it, and then click the "End Task" button.
Repeat this step until all items have been ended.
To turn the screen saver off, right mouse click somewhere on the Windows
desktop (not on any of the icons) and select "Properties" from the pop up
menu. When the "Display Properties" dialog box opens, select the "Screen
Saver" tab, select "None" from the "Screen Saver" drop down list and click
on the "OK" button.
Since you are uninstalling a Visioneer flatbed scanner, continue with the
next step, otherwise proceed to step 7 :
4. Right mouse click on the Windows "Start" button select "Explore" from the
pop up menu.
5. When the "Explorer" window opens, scroll through the list of folders on
the left hand side and locate the folder called "Windows" and click on the
plus (+) sign next to it, to expand the view, next locate the sub folder
"Twain_32" and click on the plus (+) sign next to it, to expand the view.
(Note: If the Twain_32 folder does not exist, please look for another
"Windows" folder, as some systems have two Windows folders.)
6. Now Right mouse click on the "PaperPort" or "Vizscan" folder and select
"Delete" from the pop up menu.
7. Next, from the Windows "Start" button select "Search" and then "All
Files or Folders". When the "Search" dialog box opens type MAXLINK.INI in
the "All or part of the name" field and click on the "Search" button. Make
sure the entire drive is being "Looked" in. Once the file appears in the
lower box, right mouse click on it and select "Delete" from the pop up menu.
8. Restart the computer making sure that you log in as the Computer
Administrator. (or the scanner driver will not load correctly) With NT
based operating systems, if you do not install the PaperPort software with
full Administrator rights, the scanner and Paperport software will not
function properly. This can be selected under "Start", "Control Panel", and
"User Accounts".
Download the update driver for Win XP operating system on our website at
ftp://support.visioneer.com/ftp/updatesoft/ot8100logo.exe
9. Now insert the PaperPort installation CD into the CD drive and install
the software. *****Since you are installing a USB scanner please do not
plug the scanner into the computer until AFTER the PaperPort software has
been installed.*****
10. Follow the on screen instructions (allow the software to install to the
default location) Once the Installation is complete, restart the computer
and test the scanner.
We look forward to any feedback you may have in reference, to the
suggestions made, so that we may serve you better. To provide feedback or
to obtain additional assistance, return to our web site and use the web
form. Using the "Reply" option in your e-mail will route the e-mail to an
automated e-mail box that is not monitored.
Thank you for your patronage.
Sincerely,
Micko

Any idea on what you really do after dowloading -- do you do the paperport install and THEN it asks for the driver disk and you use the ot8100logo.exe file you downloaded ??? Note Step 9 after you download the driver says
<<
*****Since you are installing a USB scanner please do not plug the scanner into the computer until AFTER the PaperPort software has been installed.***** >>
So maybe you download and run ot8100logo.exe and it does not ask you to plug in the scanner until you go to the next step and install paperport ??? Dang them, I must be illiterate or something because I did not understand.
