Wow, it wasn't even like he vigorously slit her throat or anything---the search affidavit says that the first officer on the scene entered the cafe and saw the guy holding the poor girl's head "in his hand." Wtf.

So sad. :(

If he gets deported, the Chinese government will almost certainly execute him....

Does this sound way too ritualistic and planned to just be some nutball who snapped?

I mean where did he get the knife?
Why did it seem unprovoked?
How about the relation to the victim?

Cutting off someones head in public could be one fucking hell of a way to send someone a message.

I wonder if this was mafia related?

This is why we need concealed carry on campus. I've already narrowly avoided a couple of street fights (once was a guy checking out my car, another was just a bunch of random collective stares from what appeared to be an Hispanic gang). Crazy shit like this is the reason I take Krav Maga and carry a spring-assisted (read: effectively a legal switchblade) knife. Obviously the chances that I'll ever have to use either are low, but if it comes down to it and the other guy has a gun, the gun "not being allowed on campus" won't really matter. Delaware has some retarded gun and knife laws as it is.

oh please, if everyone carried a gun the person who wanted to kill you would just be more sneaky about it. your false sense of security doesn't help you when you get hit on the head from behind b/c your attacker knows or suspects you have a gun. and you sound paranoid with the people looking at your car and hispanic gang members somehow thinking twice about tumbling with your...sheesh.

The bolded makes no sense.

As for getting hit from behind, that's why I take Krav Maga and stay reasonably alert/don't do anything stupid (ie: walk down a dark ally at 2am).

Let me go into more detail. When I say checking out, I mean I walked out of a restaurant with take-out and found a guy with a weird earring, which I later learned was an hispanic gang symbol, basically sticking his face in my car's windows. He noticed me when I was about 20' away and gave me a fricken eyes-wide death glare. Thankfully it was daylight and people weren't too far away, so I dropped eye contact and walked evasively back toward the restaurant. He got in his car and drove off.

As for the weird stares, I was using a bathroom at a gas station on a solo trip to my University (2 hours away). Wasn't the best place to stop in retrospect, but when 5 guys look at me more-or-less simultaneously for more than a couple of seconds, I start to get suspicious.

So these near death experiences were staring contests?

jonks point is that if I know everyone is carrying and I want to rob someone, I can still do it, I'm just going to wait until you are alone and I'm going to be hidden until I hit you in the head with a bat. It just changes the tactics for a determined attacker.

And if someone were out to assassinate me you might be right. Most muggers and such however are looking for an easy target. If I'm armed and they know it, my chances of a random attack are greatly reduced.

A common attacker/burglar's worst fear is encountering an armed target. Many polls have confirmed this.

Edit: And I never said they were near death experiences.

Maybe it was him who didn't want to snuggle with his dad.

Umm.. you would actually have to saw through the bone and everything.. That would take time.. while the victim is struggling as well. How was somebody not available to stop this?

Nobody allowed to carry a gun on campus, that's why.

You do not paint a pretty picture of yourself, you realize that, right?

Make that 67,000...

>>Hincker said the emergency alert system that did not perform during an incident at Pritchard Hall in the fall semester did function this time, passing 60,000 text messages in 33 minutes for the first alert and 67,000 messages in 33 minutes during a second alert.

Somebody needs to do some serious work on that system. This is what multicast is for.

33 minutes for 67K messages? Fail.

Hey Guys,

I can't comment in my role as a Hall Staff Member here at VT. I can, however, as a student I can say that we were never on lock down.

It is aggravating to see these sort of things, but this is not unique to VT - these events can happen at any school. I think what would help everyone the best would be thoughts and/or prayers at this point - especially for the victim and suspect as well as the staff at the GLC (Graduate Life Center).

Well the problem they ran into, from what I understand, was that the Cell Carriers were overwhelmed. Many text messages came and alerts were flashed in numerous different places; however, the bottleneck at this point is the cell providers.

I forget the name of the company that takes care of the alerts..

more insight
Will Segar, Zhu?s landlord at Sturbridge Square Apartments in Blacksburg, painted a picture of a young man who had come to Segar?s attention because of his bellicose interaction with those around him.

?He was rude and belligerent,? said Segar. Segar said he had to remove the thermostat from Zhu?s apartment because the young man and his two roommates refused to turn on the heat, which allowed the pipes to freeze and burst. Segar said he also had to scold Zhu about storing firewood in the middle of his carpeted floor.

?I talked to a Blacksburg police officer about him, I told him he?s harassing other people and he?s a public nuisance, and he [the officer] said he couldn?t do anything and told me to talk to international affairs at Virginia Tech,? Segar said. He added that he talked to someone at Tech, but got no useful advice on how to deal with Zhu.

The manager of the Sturbridge Square apartments said she also has had run-ins with Zhu over the past weeks, and she called his recent behavior ?very odd, very bizarre.?

?Last week he came in and accused the staff of stealing his shoes,? said Tonya Spain, property manager at Sturbridge. ?I said, ?You have two roommates; are you sure it wasn?t one of them?? But he was adamant that staff had stolen his shoes.?

Um, no. I'm not giving any prayers for the suspect. And while these things "can" happen at any school they only seem to be happening at VT for some reason.

immature adults + alcohol + guns = very bad, FYI.
