I am switching from SprintPCS to virgin mobile.

Virgin Mobile service: No contract, no activation fee.
all calls, 25 cents per minute for first 10 minutes, 10 cents for each additional minute. tax, fees included!
minimum usage requirement is $20 every 3 months.
SMS text messageing, incoming free, outgoing 10 cents each
Virgin mobile uses SprintPCS network.

For my SprintPCS service, with all the tax and fees it's $36 every month! I only use about on avg 70-80 minutes a month. With virgin mobile, my total cost would be $20.

The Party-Animal is/was on clearance at Target. I picked mine up a month ago for $40.... Should be cheaper now, but a huge YMMV.

Virginmobile often has a "20/20" sale which works out to $30 more in minutes if you also buy 3 ring-tones for $1 each. So for $10 + $3 more than what I paid, I could have got $30 more in air-time. But I'm a very light user, so I decided that's $30 that I'd never use... so I went for cheapest price out-the-door.

Best deal I could find for light-use, low cost.

 
Virgin rocks! My wife needs a phone only for emergency use (driving or shopping) and I've looked at all the other operators who offer similar service, all other plans expire after a month from the first time you use it.

The cost of maintaining a phone (with no contract) for 1 year:

Virgin: $20 (every 3 months, you don't lose any minutes) x 4 = $80

Other plans: $20 (expires after a month) x 12 = $240

 
The cheapest, especially for a very light user, is probably CallPlus. I have my mobile phone activated through Pharosint

Initial Cost: $15 for 100 minutes
Refill cost : $10 for 25 minutes

Minutes last 90 days and can be rolled over. Total annual cost $45. Must make at least one call a month. You need an unlocked tri-mode TDMA phone.

Service is pretty decent in NY/NJ area. For some reason, I have to enter telephone number twice to make calls in certain areas.

Mediaplay is also offering a instant $20 GC with the purchase of any of these phones on top of the $20 price drops.
 
Are any of these phones usable in non-digital areas?

I ask because I can use my TracFone just about anywhere. If I'm out in the backwoods of East Texas, I still have phone access. But when I look at the VirginMobile maps, it looks like I could only use it if I was on an Interstate Highway (or other major highway) going through East Texas.

And even their webpage says something like "And with voicemail included, your messages will be waiting for you even if you leave the VirginMobile service area!!!" They make it sound like a feature, but to me it just implies that I'd be SOL if not on a highway.

They use Sprint's digital network only, if Sprint works in your area, you'll be fine. And, if you are not within Sprint's cover area, you can not roam with VirginMobile's service.
 
Qualifying items must have been purchased between 11/27/03 and 11/29/03.

11/29 is last day. $59-$40(giftcard)-$10(airtime included) =$15 for a virgin mobile phone!!
 
Got one! Thanks for the heads-up, I needed one of these for a Christmas gift. I'll give the phone at Christmas and then the $40 gift card later. These are great for the occasional user.

The Tracfone deal you listed above does NOT include air time card. You'll get 10-minute air time for online activation. When you use up those 10 minutes, you cannot use the phone unless you purchase more air time. The 1-year service period only lets you keep the phone number.

I agree, Peet. Service and airtime ARE 2 different things. Pilgrim, this offer is probably the same one as http://www.tracfone.com/rates.jsp?nextPage=rates.jsp&task=rates.

 
I bought the Virgin phone sat afternoon.

I had trouble activating and called customer service. They were GREAT.
The info on their web site had incorrect numbers to do it right 🙂

How long does it take for activation?
24 hrs?
48 hours?
Customer service said to leave the phone on and wait for a text message from them.

Its been 12 hours

Wow, I envy you guys. I wish I could stay under 100m a month.

As it sits right now, I use about an hour a day. On average i'm using 800 peak, 1200 PCS-PCS, and ~1200 N+W. I'm anxiously awaiting the new 5500 Ready Link handset to hit our stores.. That should cut my PCS-PCS minutes down a bit. Of course, those are unlimited so that's not going to help drop my anytime usage.

Question for those of you on Virgin though.. I read, .25 \ min for the first 10 minutes, .10 after that. Does that mean PER CALL, IE 15min phone call = (10 x .25) + (5 x .10) = $3. Or, does that mean .25 for the first 10 minutes of calls for that paticular month and after your first 10 minutes, all minutes there after are .10? IE, you make 70min worth of calls in a month, (10 x .25) + (60 x .10) = $8.50.

It would be pretty decent for the second scenario, but i'm not so sure about the first.. If you make 80m worth of calls per month and we'll say 3 minutes per call, that would all be a .25\min or $20\month which, compared to something like Verizon's $25\month plan (100 daytime \ 500 N+W) doesn't seem to hot... And of course with VZW, you get a phone. Of course, you're under a contract, but...

Mine was activated immeditately, customer service called the cell phone after he walked me throuhg by the land phone. You better call them back, yours is not working right.

Same here. I was able to make and receive calls right away. And I never did receive any text message from them that the phone was ready to use. EDIT: Actually, i received a "Welcome to Virgin Mobile!" text message right after progamming the phone. Guess that was it.

Great phone for the price. Li-Ion battery, nice backlight, built-in LED flashlight, etc.
I've been using AT&T's prepaid service for a couple years, and I like VirginMobile prepaid service better - better phones (the ones they sell for prepaid that is), better service (can check balance right from phone, etc.)
