Violence vs. Nudity on American TV

I was watching the news the other day and they had clip of a guy walking into a bar/club and shooting his girlfriend in the face and then himself in the neck. It was on a security tape and wasn't great resolution, but you still saw both people die. This wasn't late night news either, this aired at about 7 pm.

If you can show this sort of violence on TV, then why not nudity? I don't understand why there is such a double standard?

In my opinion footage of someone being murdered in cold blood is just as bad as a hardcore sex scene.

Of course i believe that they final decision on what kids watch is up the parents, but in today's day and age, people can't be expected to manage that responsibility, so it's passed to the FCC...

So why the double standard?

Edit: spelling/grammar

I played violent video games and watched violent movies as a child. I turned out fine (as I firmly believe it doesn't affect anything), but what if I grew up watching porn? I think I'd be a little fcked up.

Call the fcc and complain about what you saw, that'll show'em!
But ya thats pretty fcuked up, thats the last thing i'd want to see at the 7 oclock news. Violent movies is one thing, to see someone actually die in real life is another.

Why the double standard? Because America is full of aggressive prudes!

Personally I think the whole "nudity is bad" attitude is just plain stupid. I like boobies.

I don't have any kids, and if i did they wouldn't have watched it, but if the news had shown it withouth the warnings prior i might have done something.

Lack of boobs + too much violence = highest percentage of serial killers?

There is abosolutely NOTHING wrong with having violence, language, or nudity on television regardless of the hour. Its still up to the parents to know what their kids are watching. Because really, they'll see it anyways if they want to.

Hell, any 9 year old with uncontrolled internet can google "boobies" and find plenty of stuff.

Plenty of people in Europe and other regions in the world grow up around topless beaches, see frontal nudity on magazine covers, etc. and manage not to grow up "fvcked up". We're way too prude in this country. Not that I'm advocating that we should allow hardcore sex on TV, but I think we've strayed to the other end of the spectrum.

Oh yeah, and the violence on TV doesn't bother me nearly as much as the fact that parents expect the FCC to control what their kids watch rather than monitoring it themselves.

Meh, I could really care less either way. 🙂

I guess I was just thinking of those stories where you hear of a sexual predator's past, and it's filled with their parents making them watch porn as children.

It's something that has been the norm for a long time now...too long really. I remember when I was growing up when my brothers and I watched a movie/tv nothing was said to us if it was violent...but if there was a sex scene/nudity it was always, "what's that you're watching? You're not old enough!" Or with the parents when some sex/nudity came on the screen it was leave the room and we'll let you know when it's ok. Ok, come back in now to see this guy get shot in the face. 😕

Yeah, we do have some pretty screwed up double standards. We have people running around "omg go see Passion of the Christ," which is fine if you want to, but there is so much gore in that film -- horror films have less. Yet if you show a boob, the world is going to end. It is hard to understand why some people find violence less offensive than a little skin (and let's be honest, we aren't talking about hardcore sex here, just a nipple here and there).

I don't have any statistics, but I'm pretty sure most sexual predators were molested at some point in their past. Forcing a child to watch porn could qualify as that, probably, just seing nudity wouldn't IMO. It's all in the context.

Lack of boobs + too much violence = highest percentage of serial killers?

Au contraire. Many serial killers started with porn, moved on to child/sadistic porn, developed twisted fetishes, and then started to materialize their fantasies. Not to say that everyone that indulges in porn will turn out that way, but it is interesting to note

It was more of a question than a statement. But I was trying to point out that America seems to have the highest violence to sex ratio on TV and the highest percentage of serial killers.

It's a conspiracy. The adult film industry doesn't want hardcore sex to be shown on TV because then profits would fall! Porn on the internet is fueled by ads, porn on DVD is fueld by video sales... porn on primetime TV would all be produced by Fox News, and it would take over the entire adult industry!

many? if you are talking about ted bundy, he was known for lying, f*cking with peoples heads. and thats what he admitted not long before he blamed it all on porn.

Porn is not going to affect anyone for better or for worse than violence. You'll get people who will see porn or violence and not be affected by it. They may be a little better lover or a little better at handling violence and that's it. Then there are mentally unstable people who will see porn or violence and go out and do bad things. Our society just has a long standing stigmatism against porn. So therefore you can have a movie with lots of violence and only a PG13 rating, where as if a movie has nudity of any kind it's R rated. Any kind of detailed nudity or sex makes it NC17 or XXX.

Porn turns people in to serial killers just like pot turns people into coke heads. People blame something more or less innocent and make it out to be the catalyst of evil.
