I'm not sure how aggressive AMD will be with its newly launched hardware for price drops. We might see a good gaming bundle for the holidays though. I was thinking since the 280X is ~$300, the 290 should be released at $400. Otherwise, if it is released at a $450 MSRP, $300-$450 is not a good dead zone to have.

This is personally from my perspective, but thinking about it I'd probably still go for a 290X since it's the fastest and I'm on water. Also, I don't have a lot of faith in nvidia's board design for high 24/7 overclocks (i.e., if I got a 780 it would be running at 1.3GHz+). Hmmmmm...
Here's what I think ~

The 780Ti will be launched well before the end of the year, probably next month, it'll be priced around 650~700$ but with the 780 now priced around the 500$ mark AMD will have to match this price cut with their own prices of 290x going down to 500$ levels, the custom cards will still be 50~100$ more, so I expect this to be the chart for top level GPU's in terms of pricing about a month from now ~
  1. 400~450$ for stock 290
  2. 450~500$ for stock 780
  3. 500~550$ for stock 290x
  4. 650~700$ for stock 780Ti

I called $500 for the 780 price drop. I must work at nvidia and shill for them on the side here in the forums :sneaky:

I want to see the price and performance on the vanilla R9 290 this Thursday now. I think nvidia knows something we don't if they dropped $150 off 780.

The interesting thing is that if 290 is slower due to some disabled silicon, it might actually make up for that by using less power, allowing it to reach higher sustained clocks with the reference cooler.

Interesting times indeed....

Wow I'm really surprised to see the 780 getting a $150 price drop. I thought it would only see $100 drop. GTX780 at $500 is really good. For those on water cooling and don't care about power, they may want to go with the R290x for maximum performance. But on air, aftermarket 780's at $500 are going to be hard to resist at least until AIB custom r290x's come.

Hell yes to competition!

I've predicted all along that it would be. Faster than Titan in gaming, slower in cuda. 2880 @ 900mhz is 25% more shader power than the 780. I hope they go with 7ghz vram as well, scaling would be quite excellent.

would want a classy like groove im sure in that case....
Most definitely, but then that adds in another $50 cost. Not to get off topic, but I'm not thinking SLI (unless AMD improves its CF support) until Maxwell because I probably won't get a 4K monitor until at least next summer, so single card performance (and price) is king for me at the moment.

That would make things very interesting. I think I've said this before, but the easy way out for nvidia is to get aggressive with the clocks but use a gimped chips (for yields). While this is good for the average consumer, it actually hurts enthusiasts/overclockers. That said, if the release a full 2880 chip, then wow, this has just turned into a slugfest.

Rarely does silicon actually consume less power for having units fused off. It's 95% determined by voltage and clocks.

It's been a year since GK110 has been in production, and a pro 2880 card has been out for a few months. The capability and stockpile should be there, especially when all the transistors for compute won't come into play and can therefore be taken out of the yield equation. Nvidia has been slow playing the high end and simultaneously overcharging until these price cuts.

Wow! A GTX 780 for $499.. I may just bite. I would like to see how the R 290 performs first and the price it will be released at.

good for consumers. nvidia was finally forced to get off their high horse with regards to pricing. good job AMD. now we need R9 290X toxic and R9 290x lightning and R9 290x matrix at USD 600. the GTX 780 Ti is going to be a tough sell at 100 bucks more than aftermarket R9 290X cards.

AMD needs to come up the ante on the bundle. BF4 needs to be added to GOLD rewards. consumers are the biggest beneficiaries. go go go AMD

We got these price drops today in Norway. It's nice nVidia sent the ball back to AMD before they release the 290.
The 780Ti has to be something great though if it will be worth 699$

Wooooooooo, price wars are back. 290 vs. 780 GTX vs. 290X, that's a difficult decision. I'm very tempted to take the plunge.

Same here. Just need to see how R9 290X do with custom coolers, sadly I don't got water like you :(

I think you meant to say R9 290x lightning and R9 290X Toxic at 525$ max.

I'm betting after market 290x's will be closer to $550 or even $580. Being that there is a lot of room for overclocking once better cooling is in place, the performance over the 780 at $500 will be apparent.

Cool. Prices went down to the usual $500 again. Still can't believe that Nvidia charged $1,000.00 for a Titan. That was record breaking stupid.

Tell me about it. I had a hunch they may do that. Glad they took the price/performance of their top tier cards more seriously.

The 780ti must be a beast of a card for them to charge $200 more.

AMD made it a big point to mention that the 290X was not competing in the "ultra enthusiast" segment, in other words, their target was the GTX 780 and not the Titan. Clearly, the 290X at stock is beating the 780 - by 11% at 1080p and more at higher resolutions. And as it happened it matched the Titan despite not gunning for it.

But now the 780 is cheaper. So now what? The 290X was gunning for the 780 as a direct competitor and WAS 100$ cheaper. Now the 780 is 50$ cheaper.
IMO, Being that AMD wanted to make their card more appealing than the 780, to me it makes sense for the 290X reference to be 499$ at a minimum preferably with a game bundle. It doesn't have to be BF4, but never settle would be a good start. Aftermarket cards would range from 510-550$ depending, that's whatever.

I can't believe they're still charging 1000$ for a Titan and didn't lower the price. What's up with that? Eh, not like anyone took it seriously after the 780 was released anyway.

I think the 290X should be 499.99$ as well to match the 780 price drop. 25$ premium for aftermarket cards. Sounds good to me, anyway.

what ? the R9 290X(uber) is anywhere from 12 - 20% faster than a GTX 780 at stock at 1440p/1600p.

http://www.nordichardware.se/Grafik...-290X-Normaliserad-spelprestanda.html#content

and R9 290X is still throttling at uber mode. so there is performance on the table for custom cooler cards to pick up by maintaining 1 Ghz in all games at all times by maintaining lower temps even in a stock mode.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/10/23/amd_radeon_r9_290x_video_card_review/13

wait for the custom R9 290X cards like toxic, matrix and lightning to see what good power delivery, custom BIOS, custom cooler can do to R9 290X. 1250 - 1300 mhz should be possible. clock for clock R9 290X is on par with Titan. so GTX 780 requires 150 - 200 mhz higher clocks to match R9 20X.
