Things don't really blow up like in the movies, generally. ;)

Theres plenty of space for pressure to escape out the filler hole. When she pulled the nozzel out, it extinguised the flames(most gas tank filler holes have a little metal flap) inside the tank.. but the tip of the nozzel was still burning.. lol

Actually she is lucky, she did the worst thing she could possibly do by pulling the nozzel out. If that does happen, you're supposed to leave the nozzel in the gas tank. By taking it out she ran the risk of fueling the fire further with oxygen.

Oregon is the only other state (besides NJ) where attendants are required to pump your gas for you. On newer cars it's lame because the dumbasses don't tighten my gas cap all the way and I keep getting a check engine light... :|

I will continue to enter and exit my car as I please while gas is pumping. I'm more likely to be hit by lightning than I am to be set on fire by gas fumes ingited by static electricity.

You are suppose to leave the pump in the tank when this occurs, so she made a double blunder

sometimes i do too. but i'm paranoid with static so i kept grounding myself as soon as i got out of the car.

i collect static charges very quickly, in a cold dry day i can actually feel my body full of electricity that needs to be discharged. usually when that happened i touched a grounded metal object with my knuckles, almost like a quick knocking, and sometimes it even lit up a sparks accompanied with a 'splat' noise :)

It's funny, I've never seen anyone go back in their car while the gas was pumping.

Plus, around here, on the self-serve pumps, they remove the little lock that keeps the nozzle pumping, do you have to keep your hand on the nozzle the whole time. Maybe that's why.

I just use the gas cap to hold it open, still clicks off when it thinks the tank is close to full.

Hmm, I never thought about that!!! It always pisses me off, especially when it's really chilly outside and your hands are freezing.

just shove your fuel tank cap under the lever.
like I do.
like every lazy american should :)

edit:
touche, bootprint :)

The ideal thing to do is to 1) click it off (or hit the Emergency Stop button) so it doesn't overfill your tank and spray flaming gasoline everywhere then 2)leave it in there and run.

not sur ewhy the vid calls it stupid. Few people know to go back in the car. I only learned 2-3 years ago that you need to re-ground if you went back in your car.

Watch it again, the gas in the tank next is on fire, you can see flames in the hole.

The reason it didn't blow up is because gas is flamable but not really explosive. The Fumes are what is explosive and that is what caused the ball of fire. The tank being full meanss there is no room for fumes so it will be a steady burn, if she'd put the gas cap back on the fire would have smothered.
