Ok so Blu-Ray won. If I get a player now can it be upgraded to the newer firmware or am I going to have to buy a new player each time new Blu-Ray firmware is released?

Don't forget Pixar's movies. Disney/Biena Vusta is the #1 studio when it comes to HD quality, by far. "Ratatouille" is a pure graphical orgasm.

And of course there are sh*tty movies with unbelievable picture quality. (like Ghost Rider) Those are not recommended.

Buy a PS3, problem solved for a good while. You also get a gaming platform, the ability to use another HDD, run certain linux distros, built-in wifi,, flash media reader (I like being able to put the SD card in and show pics on the big screen HD set) and if you get the certain SKUs hardware and/or software based backwards compatibility.

We all knew there can only be one. This is why I never adopt a new technology. Even tho BR may be the winner I am still gonna wait til they come out with a final BR standard. I have owned Betamaxes and kept using it til I could no longer get movies. I had a VHS along with the Betamax and when Beta completely fully died I transferred my beta movies to VHS. I also had and still have a massive LD collection and when DVDs came out I waited a coupla years for the format to iron out the wrinkles and bought a DVD/LD player which I still use today so I can watch DVDs and my old LD discs. LG has a hybrid HD0DVD/BR player but I wont get that as neither format has any movies I would "die" for. I will probably get a PS3 next year if the prices drop more. The only reason I dont get one now is I already have a 360 and am having a blast with it and the games on the PS3 have not caught my attention yet. Hopefully my next Christmas there will be better games and a price drop.
