Obviously a good video card will give you good performance in games. But what other functions on a computer are dependent on the video card rather than the cpu to perform well?
 
3d rendering stuff is the other common thing.

Video editing, photoshop, and other 2d applications that some people think are videocard intensive actually don't benefit from a fast 3d card.

Besides games, a good videocard will also allow you to do some nifty stuff like display on a tv or other display. Some cards have more options along these lines like VIVO etc.
