Video Card Problem - X850XT or 6800 Ultra

I have heard that SLI does have some stability problems. With new drivers, problems will be fixed, and new problems will arise.

Yeah, it's a real problem, especially with widescreen LCDs. HERE

It seems that nVidia is not doing anything about it.🙁🙁

Do you have/planning on getting a widecreen?

It will be about another 4 months before the next driver is released. I suggest wait until the NV50 and R520 come out. X850 will be outdated. SLI is too expensive. 6800 Ultra by itself isn't powerful enough.

Yeah, I got a 2405FPW about two weeks ago.

I was going to wait, but knowing ATI, they'll probably paper launch the R520 this summer, and it won't be until the end of the year before people can start buying this video card for $600~$700. What I might do is that I'll buy the X850XT now, and sell it when the R520 become widely available.

Or you could by an X800 Pro or X800 XL now instead of spending too much money now.

I thought about that too, but I can get a new X850XT from a friend of mine for about $410. It'll probably have higher resell value too.

BTW, thanx for your help...🙂

You're probably right Jenneth- the more games that come out with nV only features, the higher the value of the X850 will rocket!

Let me ask you guys this:

Let's say I'm not going w/ the SLI configuration, I'll get a highend video card for now, and I'll upgrade it to the NV70/R520 when it becomes widely available, and sell the old video card. Which one would you guys recommend then?

X850XT or 6800 Ultra?

I can get either one for about $410.

It came with the system, and if it's so obsolete then how do you explain the fact that it will outperform your (if you have one) 6800 in EVERY game expcept for the pathetic Doom III.

Err, don't go all E-peenos on me Kini62.

I have a A64 3800+ and two 6800GTs, your prefab Intel Dell is slow compared to my gamer's rig.

Yeah it "sucks". It probably made Id millions.

So, that doesnt mean it doesnt suck. 😕

It was my favorite game of last year, and a lot of other people's. It might not be as good as Half Life2 for most people, but it wasn't Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness either.

I like how unremarkable people like you so casually say work that is in the top tier of it's field "sucks".

I'm sure Carmack is crushed as he counts his millions and reads his tech accolades to know the mighty Bouzouki thinks his work "sucks".

The game was repatative. But I can appreciate the scary essence and atmosphere of the game. And the time that was put into it. It had the best utilization of lighting I have ever seen. But the textures on the walls and guns weren't all that detailed. You could really see it at close range. It's definitely not the best utilization of mapping out there. But the game was still good!

Hi Rollo - I've been reading some of your posts on AnandTech and have been very interested in your system configuration because it is very similar to the computer I am getting ready to build. Can you give me your opinion on the following system configuration? Specifically, I want to be able to use this hardware for the next two years without any upgrades and would like to be able to play Age of Empires III when it comes out with most if not all of the eye candy maxed out. Ok, here goes, here is what I'm thinking about building:

- Asus A8N Deluxe SLI Mobo
- AMD Athlon 64 3800+ or 4000+ (need help on this one)
- 2 BFG Geforce 6800 GT SLI video cards
- 250 GB Maxtor hard drive
- Enermax 535 watt power supply
- Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS

I'll be buying a 19" LCD with 1280 x 1024 native resolution. I would appreciate any opinions you have. OR, is there something big thats going to be coming out within the next couple of months that I should wait on? I appreciate any feedback you could give me!

Thanks,

Pull out one card and I could beat your system on everything but Doom III

Thanks,

That rig will rock anything out there for the next few months, but:
1. It's almost overkill for 12X10 native resolution, although I suppose you can really max detail settings. I'd get a 20" lcd.
2. The R520 is supposed to be launched soon, but no one but ATI can tell you when and when cards will ship.
3. 3800+ vs 4000+ Faster is always better, but I doubt you'd notice the difference.

You'll love that rig in any case. If you're a gamer, it's a dream come true, probably powerful enough to last you well into next year.

BTW I think Age of Empires is SM3 native, so that rig will rock Age of Empires. Better than any X800 stuff, for sure.

Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? Can I keep the cpu at stock clocks, or do I have to downclock it because Intels can't keep up?

Please lower the clock some 🙂

Hey Rollo, it's been fun cranking ya. I don't profess to have all the answers or even know what I'm talking about half the time. I was mostly just shi@@ing ya.

As far as video cards go, I could care less about this and that. If Dell was offering the system with the Ultra at the time that's what I would have and I'd be happy with it. They were offering the system with the 850 so that's what I got and I'm happy with it.

Though to be honest I really don't think SM3 or Pixel shader 3 (if they're different) will mean much to 95% of users.

As long as you are happy with what you have then it doesn't matter what the other guy has.

And really you must admit that Doom III kind of sucks the big one. I mean, talk about an over hyped game. Overall the games graphics and AI and game play are really pretty dull.

Come on, you can admit that.

As far as the clock speed, take it down to 1.8 please.😱
