Vid cards with 64 bit OSes

Seems like both Nvidia and ATI cards have an issue running on Vista 64 with the vid driver stopping and causing a system reboot. Has anyone heard of a solution for this yet? Is anyone running Vista 64 and not having this issue? Got plenty of ram but am having to use XP because I got the error message with Vista on my ATI card, HD3870.

Pretty much EVERYONE is running V64 and NOT having this issue. If your that unstable with both types of cards, I suspect another HW on your box.

Huh? Where did you hear this?

I'm running Vx64 just fine w/8800gt.

tried out vista x64 with my GTX260 and i didnt have any problems.

initially (when vista came out and a few months after) there were bugs, but for the most part, they are gone.

No problems here 4870X2. Don't be fooled, people usually come onto forums when they have a problem that needs solving, they don't start threads saying 'everything is ok'. So what you end up with is a disproportionate amount of threads saying 'x is wrong with x drivers' and it gives the impression that theyre ALL like that when it's not- plenty of people never have an issue with drivers, and for the most part I am one of them.

Well, I have a 8800GTS512 and sometimes nvidia driver stops due to conflicts with aero... at least that says the alert window... (vista64 here)

No issues, been using 7800GT card and recently 4870 card in Vista x64,you got anything overclocked, whats the error message?

Btw be careful of factory overclocked video cards, one gave me issues awhile back when I was using XP ,until I found out I had to underclock it slightly to get it 100% stable.

The error I got with Vista 64 was "atikmdag stopped responding". I did a search on Google and found a similar problem exists with Nvidia cards but their driver is called nvlddmkm. Nobody seems to know what causes this issue but when I went back to XP, the issue has not reappeared. Not sure if its Vista related or if its the 64 version only that has this issue.

Yes its a common problem in Vista, both 32 and 64. I haven't seen it in over a year of Vista 64 usage. Its most likely due to other issues besides your video card or drivers though. Here's some things to check, but it'd be helpful to list all of your system specs:

1) Fully update Vista, SP1 is ideal but all the graphics hot fixes for 2007 for sure.

2) Update your BIOS.

3) Update your system drivers

4) Check your RAM and any tweaked RAM settings in the BIOS. If you have multiple sticks of RAM, try pulling and testing them 1 by 1.

If I had to bet I'd say its bad RAM or a BIOS version/setting causing the problem.

My system would randomly restart because of bad memory. Got RMA and new one did same thing after a while. That was G.Skill HZ that required 2.1v

Now I use low volt (1.8v) only.

Never a problem when I changed memory. When it was bad, random restarts

The only time I run into any significant driver issues (vpu recovery, driver stopped, etc... ) is with multi-gpu setups (both NV and ATI), but even that is pretty seldom. Generally when you have an ongoing crash or errors across multiple applications/situations, it's hardware related. Usually too much heat, not enough power, or a little of both.

Let's see. I tested my ram with Memtest and it passed with no problems. Considering I have never had the issue with XP on the same hardware makes me think its not a hardware issue. I had SP1 and up to date drivers for my install of Vista 64. No heat issues with the vid card either. Found a potential solution as they say not to install Catalyst Control center but rather just use the driver only. May try that this weekend since not using CCC supposedly eliminates the atikmdag.dll from being installed in the first place.

No issues like that here. I have had problems with audio and video stuttering (and anything to do with motion graphics, like screen savers) but I seem to have eliminated it (thank GOD).

*shrug* believe what you want because my system and many systems have been running ATI hardware with the WHQL driverset including CCC for a very long time with no stability issues.

8800 GTS, ran fine for almost a year, switched to 4870 which I only had for a few months. Both have been running Vista x64 just fine with no crashes. I did wait till drivers were more stable before making the switch to Vista x64 only after drivers were more stable but considering the time of your post, the drivers should work fine.

Now, no drivers are 100% stable and you might have a rare hardware conflict or software conflict that is causing these issues. I just find it strange that the issue is present with ATI and nVidia cards. Seems like something else is to blame.

Admittedly my 4870 hasn't gotten much work due to me being busy lately as well as the fact that I recently got a Q9550 and have been playing with overclocking it.
