Vicodin and Me

So I had a minor surgery done today and the vicodin instructions say 1 every six hours for pain.

I'm sorry, but this doctor is seriously overestimating my healing abilities or something.

He says I need two days of recovery, I had to use a week of vacation time rather than short term disability because of that.

So anyways I'm in real pain and the pills are 5 vicodin 500 acetaminophen. I've already taken two and I'm wondering how many is dangerous?

I'm not a doctor but Ive had a few surgeries and injuries. I've never had a bottle say more than 2 every 4-6 hours.

If you're still in pain, TAKE IBUPROFEN. Too much acetaminophen is horrible for your liver. You can add 800 mg of IB every 6 hours. That's what I did when I had abdominal surgery, and it was a saving grace. That dosage is what I was told is safe, but make sure to call the advice nurse to verify.

Why would you ask this on AT and not call up your doctor? If you need something different, maybe he can prescribe it.

I think vicodin is pretty much the strongest he'll give me.

I'm sure a 21 year old asking for powerful pain killers might raise an eyebrow somewhere and besides this guy already thinks I'm like wolverine or some sh*t.

You need to contact your doctor about pain management rather than play around with dosages.

Vicodine mostly made me sleepy; no real pain reduction I noticed. Perkasat(sp) was about the same, just slightly stronger.

Now the IV stuff they give is different, after one surgery they didn't like my vitals in post op so pumped some anti narcotics to get me runnign quicker.

OMG, was that one of the most painfull experiences I've ever had.

He gave you (5) Vicodin? Five? Wow I've heard about conservative but I don't think I've ever heard of a smaller amount.

I had dental surgery a few years ago and doc had no qualms about filling me up with a couple bottles. Of course the surgery was kind of nasty and quite painful, so ymmv.

If you just had a mole removed or something I can understand but if you're in pain from surgery they should hook you up. That's what insurance is for...

5/500 . Not 5 pills.

If you take Ibuprofen always take it with food! If you miss a dose, just skip it. Don't be tempted to take it between meals. You can develop ulcers or related digestive problems if you don't heed that warning and it's plainly on the label. I speak from experience. It's also true of a variety of related medications, so take my advice in this. It took me a long time to get over the problems I had because of that.

Myself, maybe I just have a high pain threshhold, or maybe my post surgical pain was just way less than yours because of the procedures I've had, but I usually don't even take the vicodin they prescribe for me. I have several vials sitting around. Once in a while I take one as a sleeping pill. Works like a charm.

"No harm in asking." Maybe he'll prescribe you Percodan. I hear that's some powerful sh*t.

Reference to House MD. He's addicted to Vicodin, and is forced to withdrawal. He cuts himself to relieve pain.

I have had 6 surgeries on my knee and ankle and a hernia in my stomach repaired. Just don't go crazy, and try to take a few ibprofin with the V.

On a side note, after the hernia I spend like a week in bed on percocet and watched seasons 1-4 of 24... it was a crazy ****** week!

warning: too much ibuprofen is potentially harmful to your kidneys, this is where it's metabolised. as is acetaminophen harmful to your liver.
