very simple SATA questions

Ok, I don't know alot about SATA, so I am curious about something... I currently have a Abit NF7-S r2 mobo. Right now I am running two IDE HDD's on channel 1 and two optical (CDRW and DVD) on channel 2, is it possible to run all four of these items as well as a SATA hard drive on sata 1? I was not sure if the serial ports used up the same channel as IDE 1.

IF this is the case and I can either choose to run SATA or IDE 1, then can I used the IDE to SATA adaptor that came with my mobo and run my 40gb (windows drive) with the adaptor in sata 1 and run the new SATA drive (160GB) in sata 2? This would work as well as I wanted to move my other ide drive to a server anyway.

A third simple question... I know that windews has problems with drives above something like 137 GB, will it have any issues with a 160GB (not partitioned) attached to my sata?

Thanks for the help, all these are pretty simple questions but they are things I have no experience with

the Sata port is totally different then your other ide ports... and its not a problem to run devices on both ide and sata ports at the same time

im not sure about older versions of windows, but winxp has no problems with drives larger then 137gb (although many older motherboards dont support the larger drives without a bios update)

Hi ,

You cant run anything on your IDE 1 MASTER if you have a SATA drive plugged in , It uses the IDE 1 MASTER or IDE 1 MASTER channel.

I have a SATA drive and i can only use IDE 1 SLAVE and IDE 2 MASTER & SLAVE .

I think it's better not to plug anything into the IDE 1 at all ... just until you get your SATA drive up and running ... i done that , i just used IDE 2 for my DVD & CD/RW and left IDE 1 empty until i got the SATA drive configured .

yeah btw as boonesmi says windoes XP should be fine , I put a 180gig HDD into my other windows XP , at first the motherboard would only see it as just under 120gig , BIOS update fixed that ... I think if you have all the latest XP updates your HDD will be seen as full capacity .:)

Hope it all goes we'll :D

uhh what are you talking about???

in his case his ide ports and sata ports arent even using the same controller chip (much less the same channel) so he wont have any problem running sata drives and ide drives at the same time.. and they can be on any channel he wants

my board uses the vt8237 southbridge with native Sata and i also can use any of the sata ports and any of the ide ports at the same time.... actually im currently running 2 sata harddrives and and a cdrom and cdrw are master/slave on ide 1... on ide 2 i have a dvd-rw drive and dvdrom

boonesmi : the Silicon Image SiL3112 chip which i have onboard uses the IDE 1 MASTER channel on some boards .
and i think the Silicon Image SiL3112 is the chip thats on the Abit NF7-S r2 motherboard [though im not 100% sure] ... i was only giving him what i know and something to try ... because i had the problem of having a HDD in my IDE 1 MASTER and i couldnt get my SATA too work.

Its the same with Marvel Onboard SATA chips ... they use the IDE 1 MASTER channel on some motherboards .

And please dont PM me .... i do read these posts you know, so theres no need to PM me about something like that .:)

sorry if i offended you by sending you a PM :)

but it seemed the most appropriate way to point out that your giving bad info (since i didnt know if you would check back with this thread, and i didnt want you misleading others)

he is asking about the nf7-s... if you do a little research you will see that he can use any/all of the ide ports and still use the sata ports (which is what he was asking about, and your info was FUD)

which board are you refering to? your sig says you have a lanparty nf2 board, which i didnt think used the sil3112 chip??

It was simply a quick option to see if it would have solved the problem .
My board is an D845PEBT2 not the one in my sig it's my bothers PC.

Because some motherboards SATA DO and i'll highlight DO use the IDE 1 MASTER .

If it didnt work , then it didnt work .... i wasnt going to go and spend ages researching the NF7 board .... I was just posting a quick reply to see if it helped the guy out .... i mean all he had to do was was unplug his IDE1 and try it ???

Your going on as if i told him to dismantle his computer and put it back together with chewing gum.

You,ve obviously got far too much time on your hands ...

thanks for the replys guys. What chip does the NF7-S use and can it run IDE 1 and SATA at the same time? Also, can I just use the IDE to SATA adaptor on my windows drive and run the new SATA on the other sata port while leaving IDE 1 completely alone? thanks

-spike

EDIT: Sorry, I did not read the responses clearly enough, now I see that the chip used may or may not use ide 1 for sata. Well, then I want to stress my second question more, all I really want is two hdd's and two optical, so can I just use the sata adapter on the main ide (40gb) and use the sata drive on the other sata channel? Again, thanks for the help

Hi ,

I belive the Abit NF7 uses the Silicon Image SiL3112 SATA controller chip.

I dont know if the Abit NF7 board can run a device on IDE 1 Master along with SATA , I just know that some SATA chip use the IDE 1 Master port , but i guess bonnesmi must know more about the NF7 , so he says it dosent.

I dont know if you can use the IDE to SATA adaptor , ive never tried it. but my guess is that you would be able , id try it anyway .

hehe i dont think you read his original post very well.... he didnt say anything about having problems setting up a sata drive.. so your statment
"it was simply a quick option to see if it would have solved the problem"
doesnt really apply... he was trying to find out if he can keep all his existing ide drives where they are, and just install an sata drive (at least thats the way i understood his post)

Because some motherboards SATA DO and i'll highlight DO use the IDE 1 MASTER
im aware of that... the lanparty board in your sig uses the marvel chip and it shares.... my question was what board you were refering to that uses the SiL3112 controller and shares the primary master?

reading this thread i can see why you are confused :)

so ill try to clear it up a little

your motherboard can use any/all sata and ide ports at the same time

this means if you want to hook your new sata drive to the sata port and leave your old harddrive as master on ide 1 it will be fine

or you can use a sata/ide adaptor and run your new sata drive on the master on ide 1 and move your old drive to slave on ide1 and leave your two optical drives as master and slave on ide2

about the pata to sata adapter you mentioned... it really doesnt give you much advantage (it just lets you run the old style ide harddrive on your sata port) but it still runs about the same fast... and one thing to keep in mind is that for the drive to work correctly i believe it has to be ata100 or ata133 (so make sure your 40gb drive isnt an older ata66 style)

ok, thanks for clearing that up. I was not planning on using the adaptor to gain any speed, I just wanted to see if it was a viable option if the choice came down to SATA OR IDE, not both. Thanks a ton guys for taking the time to answer... now I just need to finish getting the $$ together to get me that SATA drive... :)
