If this is a prank, the guy must have a lot of patience. Unless the guy witnesses the doc's reaction or knows what he's going to do about it... this guy isn't getting much return from all this effort. I'm thinking it has to go further.

Naw, screw that, I'll just stroll my happy ass over to the foreign language department and get someone who speaks Chinese if you need me to. My Japanese professor is Chinese, though she's out for today; I could ask her tomorrow if I can't find anybody today.

Your Japanese professor is Chinese?? Now that is strange.

In college, my french professor was an american...that's not necessarily wacky. Not just japanese people speak the language.

I know that but there is a great deal of tension between China and Japan. I don't think it has abated all that much. Most Chinese people probably haven't forgotten the Rape of Nanking etc.

The tension between China and Japan? The Japanese people never renamed Chinese food as "freedom food." :)

you've never been to china or japan have you? it's true, there is great tension between the people and china and japan. The Chinese dispises the japanese for the atrocities during WW2 while the Japanese look down on the Chinese, to them, the Chinese is a bunch of peasants.
Just... Wow. I'm Chinese and I never understood why my dad disliked the Japanese so much. I mean I knew there was a history, but never thought to look it up.

the worst is that till this day the japanese still denies the history, they omit the dark chapter in text books, and tell people that they were doing china a favor by cleansing the population.
I saw that... and I hope that generation and all those responsible die(d) a long horrible death.

my conjecture is that the doc knows something, the sender obviously expects the receiver to understand the message.
Ever read Sherlock Holmes, the sign of the four?
one more thing, the fact that the letters are addressed to both the doc and his wife intrigues me, what does his wife have to with it.

the korean language is a distinctly different language from chinese, BUT a lot of the words are rooted in chinese characters, sah being an example.

And the Japanese have "Kanji"(sp?) in their writing (I took Japanese for 2 semesters)... which is Chinese.

Of course you'd check to see if the gameboard had been cut, right? I mean, if the library is still intact on the gameboard, it wasn't them.... unless they had multiple gameboards.

Although, if it were me, I'd dispose of the evidence.

Is there tracking information on the bottom of the envelope? The post office could find out (although probably won't tell *you*, but will the authorities) what PO location the envelope was sent from etc based on the bar code.

Going out on a HUGE stretch, bigger than anyone else I've read thus far (replying as I read the thread, so sorry if I've got multiple posts in consecutive order):

The runic equivalent of 4 is Ansuz - The Messenger Rune (ironic, no?). Here's the definitions of what it's supposed to mean, if you believe the stuff (I like it for entertainment value, not a believer):

From http://www.runemaker.com/futhark/ansuz.shtml

Translation: A god. Odin. (In reverse, Loki, messenger of the gods and a trickster)

Meaning: Knowledge. Wisdom. Communication. The mouth. A message.

Characteristics: Ansuz is primarily Odin's rune and represents communication, creativity, controlled, and divine power. Spiritually, it is the rune of prophecy and revelation. It also encompasses the ideas of wisdom, knowledge, reason, and therefore of instruction and good advice. It might also refer to a test, examination, or perhaps an interview. It can mean a letter, book, paper, message, or other information. Because Loki was a renowned trickster, Ansuz may also portend a surprise, trick, or subterfuge.

Personal Interpretation: The answers to questions are available but not yet recognized. Look for signs and confirmations which are all around. Everything has a significance and appreciation of this will lead to understanding. Ensure you don't ignore the message because you don't like the content. All experience is a lesson that teaches by acknowledging the truth, and wisdom will increase.

Reverse: Take care not to misinterpret information. Something you read is more important than it appears. Beware pranks.

Converse (upside-down): Failed communication. Lack of clarity or awareness. Hidden messages (again, ironic). Secrets. Information disguised. What appears to be a trick is genuine.

Runic Number: 4

Color: Dark Blue

Element: Air

Polarity: Male

Associated gods: Odin, Loki, Eostre

Astrological Correspondence: Venus

Rather interesting, it being the rune representing communication and messages, and also that, when converse as the 4 on the letter was, meant hidden messages. Maybe I'm looking too far into it, although there sure *are* a lot of coincidences :p

Hmm...or four lives [of one person possibly]? If you have a family of four, I'd be scared shetless. The four of hearts representing four lives makes perfect sense to me.

This is scary shite. I'd call the cops(like any other sain human). I want to know if the doctor is a part of a family of 4, too.

Yes he is, if I read the thread earlier correctly (bottom of page 2 I think)

This thread is getting long so I may have missed this, but were there any postmarks/cancellations with time, date and location the the letters were sent from? Were all of the envelopes and postage stamps the same?

About the '4' thing, when I was in Korea a couple years back, the elevator buttons would be labeled '1, 2, 3, F, 5, 6 ... ect." Pretty trippy imo. heh.

Good lord!

As a security professional, I would urge you to ask your mom have the doc go to the cops. It doesnt hurt anything if he does, it can't do anything but help the situation.

I'm a little familiar with it before this thread. I play a character in the LARP I play (linked in sig) who is a superstitious, self-proclaimed "magic" creature, who believes he can tell fortunes (there's a skill that allows him to get one piece of information from the GM, and I RP it with my home-made Rune deck)

Sorry! My internet has been out since Sunday. The cable line to our house got cut, and they just installed a temporary line today while I was at school. Anyways, I have a good update for ya'll! My mom's work seems to be all over this, and are planning on calling the authorities after asking a few people in the office if they are just playing a joke.

Anyways, the fourth letter came. It was four scanned pictures of women. The doc's wife didn't elaborate much, they they seemed pretty random, one was of a woman with a basket of flowers on her head.

But here is the better part. It seems that the head doctor of the practice, who left about a year ago, is also getting these letters. He got the 4 of spades and a cut out of the kitchen from the game clue.

Also, the 4 letters the doctor and his wife have been getting have all been from different locations. The first one was from Portland, the second from South Portland, the third from Scarborough, and the fourth from Yarmouth. For those who live in Maine, this will make sense. For those who don't, just know that they are around 20 miles of eachother...

Anyways, that is where this stands now!

So maybe he's been cheap, yet lucky, and has no clue? :p

Yeah, this reply is worthless
