He was driving his UPS truck on his normal route which is pretty far out of town. He stopped behind a CDF Engine (CA Dept. Forrestry) which was stopped behind some other traffic due to road work. Along comes an 18 wheeler...
The driver never touched his brakes, hit the rear of my friends truck pushing him into the CDF fire engine, then across into oncoming traffic where he hit a small truck and eventually ended up against the guard rail.
It took the jaws of life to get him out and a helicopter ride into the trauma center. Luckily he only has a severely sprained neck, bruised ribs, and concussion. (He was also lucky in that he doesn't remember anything until he was flying to the hospital.)
I am going in to see him again this morning at the hospital before we do our mass casualty sim at the very hospital he is staying in. Can you imagine what type of investigation this is going to be?
Caltrans working on the road. Did they have the proper signage set up? ("Stopped traffic/flagman ahead")
18 wheeler commercial truck involved.
UPS truck involved.
CDF Fire engine involved?
2 patients transported to the hospital, one via helicopter?
I was with him in the hospital all morning yesterday, and aside from some serious nausea (and a neck brace) he's doing pretty damn well, all things considered.
