He was driving his UPS truck on his normal route which is pretty far out of town. He stopped behind a CDF Engine (CA Dept. Forrestry) which was stopped behind some other traffic due to road work. Along comes an 18 wheeler...

The driver never touched his brakes, hit the rear of my friends truck pushing him into the CDF fire engine, then across into oncoming traffic where he hit a small truck and eventually ended up against the guard rail.

It took the jaws of life to get him out and a helicopter ride into the trauma center. Luckily he only has a severely sprained neck, bruised ribs, and concussion. (He was also lucky in that he doesn't remember anything until he was flying to the hospital.)

I am going in to see him again this morning at the hospital before we do our mass casualty sim at the very hospital he is staying in. Can you imagine what type of investigation this is going to be?

Caltrans working on the road. Did they have the proper signage set up? ("Stopped traffic/flagman ahead")
18 wheeler commercial truck involved.
UPS truck involved.
CDF Fire engine involved?
2 patients transported to the hospital, one via helicopter?

I was with him in the hospital all morning yesterday, and aside from some serious nausea (and a neck brace) he's doing pretty damn well, all things considered.

If he was stopped and the CDF engine stopped - Cal Trans is not involved to any fault.

the 18 wheeler is fully responsible from the way your described it.

My investigation into that would last all of 15 minutes to talk to all the drivers of the vehicles involved and witnesses, if any. Pretty cut and dry to be honest.

that is correct, same thing happened to me in a smaller scale, and no injury.

there was a van stopped at the light, my truck stopped behind him... some freaking chinese woman driver (i understand what she were saying to the other chinese women in the car) couldn't stop in time and hit me from behind, i hit the van in front of me.

police officer shows up and gave her a ticket.

I work for Caltrans. Likely the closure was set up correctly. We have safety meetings every 10 working days and this stuff is drilled into our heads.

Most likely is that the truck driver is a fucking retard that shouldn't be on the road. Probably on his phone or pissing into a bottle to throw out the window.

There will be more to it than that.

They will definitely review Caltrans procedures and signage on the project, but I would bet that will be quick and easy.

They will want to check the driver of the 18 wheeler for drugs/alchohol.

They will want all service records on the 18 wheeler.

I'm sure CDF and UPS have a mandatory internal investigations for any accident, although these should be fast. Even my construction company has this as a mandatory policy and even with a simple investigation it takes a day out of some managers time to interview all employees involved and review police reports and write our internal report.

I saw him very early this morning and they were planning on discharging him by 10:00. I can't tell you how scary that is when you hear news like that about a very good friend/family member. We lived together in the 7th grade as stepbrothers for a year, our parents almost got married. We also served in the Navy together.

Glad you are OK Bro.
