So far surfing the web it is really snappy. Newsgropups appear to be limited at the server :(

Anyone have a suggestion on a friskey news server provider?

*Edit* Just switched my profile to 500 topics and 500 messages per page... wow.

The newsgroups do seem to be limited to about 400-500 kbps per connection. If you didn't already know, you can get a newsgroup reader like Newsbin that will let you establish up to 8 simultaneous connections. I normally get about 2.5 mbps on my 3/768 dsl line. The 2.5 mbps is also about the same speed I get from dslreports speed tests.

I think most of the premium usenet providers will let you download at whatever speed you can connect at. I used to use easynews.com, which has a very useful web interface if you don't want to deal with downloading headers and unrar-ing multiple posts. You can also check out giganews and usenetserver.com

Yeah, I forgot I was connecting to my legacy news server which has more groups, but pretty weak download speeds. Switched to the Verizon server using new reactor and all is well. Still thinking about getting GigaNews...

Ok, anyone have suggestions on a nice large download to test this on? I was thinking about pulling a Linux ISO, but the SUSE I was hankering for wouldn't establish a good connection.

You can really tell with FIOS that much of the speed is server dependant.

EDIT:

2005-02-01 07:03:35 EST: 4899 / 1803
Your download speed : 5017273 bps, or 4899 kbps.
A 612.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 1846437 bps, or 1803 kbps.

Nothing worse than being stuck in 768/128 hell when you are paying for 1.5/128... I hope the FIOS will trickle down on my end, I'd be happy with 768/348.

The initial wave of splicers is in front of my house in Rockville, MD

I didn't expect to see this for years, I'm still in a semi-orgasmic state.

Kinda surprised that no one has mentioned Murrieta yet. It's just north of Temecula, in the south Riverside area of southern california. They've been laying cable for some time now and are getting ready to roll out the service. I'm about 20 miles away but am planning to move to Temecula because it's closer to work. Hopefully they'll start there next.

Will this still have some sort of limitations like the regular DSL has? I am a little over 16,000 ft. from CO and therefore stuck with 768/128 for who knows how long (indefinately??? It's been 2 years since I tried 1.5/128 Verizon, but it was so inconsistent I downgraded my service.), so will FIOS havce a much larger span it will cover since it is fiber optic? How do you find out if it is available? Seems Verizon would keep this thing a secret for as long as posible or everyone would want it for just $10 more than what they are charging now.

AFAIK, they run fiber optic to your nearest phone pole, so you only have a run of copper from the phone pole to your house. So, instead of 16,000 feet, you're only 160 feet... or maybe even less!

When I got home from work today I had a voicemail from Verizon to call a number to sign up. I'm now on the phone with a rep as I type this to order it. :D

I'm envious!

For those of you who have it.... what are the limitations other than speed?

Are any ports blocked so that you can't run your own HTTP/FTP/SMTP servers?

Can you get a static IP address for a charge if you want one?
