Verizon DSL 1.5/128 for $34.99(Maybe 29.99)

Alright, called yesterday 5/2 gonna get the ?Juice? turned on 5/12. SWEET DEAL!! BTW, I live here in Boston.

I really thought about getting DSL thru Verizon a few weeks ago so I?m glad I waited, truly, all good (unexpected) things come to those who wait. And I was fully prepared to shell out $50 for the 768/128k package. ;-)

[/b]Just Two Questions for anyone out there who can help me:

1. When I spoke to the rep. on the phone, he mentioned that the install software I get won?t be using any PPPoE software like I used with Verizon DSL in the past. Is this True?? Im a bit skeptical. If PPPoE does come with the DSL and I do need to use it, are there any other alternatives to it, or can I install some stripped down version so I don?t have to install all of that software that Verizon wants you to.

2 Once I get the DSL, I want to share the DSL connection for two WIN 98 PCs. (Mine and friends.) Can Anyone give me any good links online for guides n such that would help me out on this. And has anyone had any trouble sharing a Verizon DSL connection? Just asking.

Thanks a million guys, and as soon as I get the gear and hook it all up, and test the line, I?ll post a speed report.

Call Me Crazy But Ned Flanders Is Nifty

Well to share your DSL, I would recommend the Linksys BEFSR41 Router, its been rock stable for me for 2 years now with no problems, very easy to set up too and I have 3 comps in my basement setup thru this router, 2 on win98se and 1 on XPpro. I game alot and have no problems plyaing online or with ping times to games like BF1942, Wolfenstein Beta just released, DAOC, etc etc. I live here in Virginia and Verizon has been excellent so far since I switched from Adelphia Cable which has gotten terrible like the guy above, very slow in evenings, so I switched to DSL and solid speed all the time. I didnt install any of the software by verizon either since my Router and OS seem to have everything needed already to run out of the box. The router usually runs $49 to $69 bucks at BestBuy or Amazon, but I am sure its lower when you find sales or rebates. GL

EDIT: Hmm I just called and was told I dont qualify for the 1.5 upgrade because the "frame relay" is at 768 and cant do the higher speeds even though I am only 400ft from the telco...Im just quoting what he told me since I have no clue if he is correct or what that means 🙂 He switched me to the plan anyway which will kick in at $34.95 after my promtion ends of 6months at $29.95. He said in the future if they upgrade my relays then I will have to call in to have the speed switched but at least now I can still take advantage of the price reduction by calling in. I think i will try though like the guy above and call in several times to make sure I didnt get a "lazy" billing person.

hm... I am kinda lost.
I've been using verizon DSL for like a half year.
My plan is 768/128 at $49 a month and I've been paying that price.
What can I do to get a free upgrade to 1.5M or reduced price per month??

Do they offer fixed IP
1. Yuck. Point To Point Protocal over Ethernet.

2.Not for that price.

does certain areas serviced by verizon use pppoe and others arent? in my area, socal, you just fire up the modem, let it sync up and bam, you're up and running. no logging in and all that crap.

Puribong, Yes just call that 800 number listed in thread then in the voice automated response say "billing" when the CSR comes on, tell them you want to upgrade to new plan of 1.5 for $34.95 monthly, they will test your line, if you qualify, they will upgrade you to 1.5 at a price of only $34.95, BUT even if you dont qualify for the faster speed, they will still give you the new price of $34.95 for your current 768 speed. But you must call to get the new pricing now and also perhaps get the higher speed, either way you win if your paying $49 monthly now.

JVANG, same here, ordered DSL, they shipped everything in box in 3 days, turned on DSL 4 days later, sent me an email to connect, I connected everything without using any of the supplied Verizon software and poof p and running with no problems...I have no idea what everyone is talking about this dialup mess, my connection here in Virginia is always on just like Cable Modem was.

EDIT: Also by signing up for Package price with Verizon for Local, Long Distance, and DSL you can save even more, just check the link for your state.
Verizon Package Rates

I live in Philadelphia. I called Friday, spoke to a rep in less than 5 minutes, and she says I will get the upgraded 1.5 within 4 business days, which is next Wednesday. She said that it may even get done this weekend. I have Verizon Unlimited, which is calling unlimited in the US, including Canada for $55 or so, and this brought my DSL price down to $35. With the upgrade, I will get an even lower rate of $29.99. Very cool!

With or without PPPoE, download on a 1.5 line should be about 1300-1400KB/sec on a well calibrated machine, on a good line. The other 100-200KB is eaten up by line overhead.

With a Win2K or XP box all should be OK without further adjustment. 95/98/98se RWIN would need to come up a bit most likely to the 16K range or so. DSLReports Tweaks Forum has all the info for free on this.

With PPPoE, MTU may be adjustable as well (up to 1492) depending on the connection software used. Typically WinPoet is used by Verizon, though I would recommend using a router, or XP's built in connection software if using XP.

You're on a PPPoE line yourself. "Fireup the modem and let it sync"? An always on connection is just that, always on. Press the IE button and you're there. Of course, most routers will do this for you now, as opposed to using the connection software from the ISP.

From the Verizon site:

"Click and connect in an instant."

It's gotten faster, but still connecting.

i use earthlink($49.95 a month thru verizon line) for 768/128 service. if i called them up and asked them to do a pricematch(verizon is available here too, and my line qualifies for 1500/128 service), anyone think they would be willing to do a pricematch?

Unless you have verizon long distance or some kind of advance package you will pay 35$. You get discount of 5$ for special plans.

Why are broadband providers so generous with download speeds and so stingy with upload speeds? The story they've always given is that people don't download as much as they upload. And, for the most part, that's true. But c'mon, 128 is ancient, like ISDN ancient! At the very least base upload should at least be 256, or better yet 384. I know I'm preaching to the choir here but are they even listening here on this one?

Frame is probably the connection your CO is running on. Until they update that trunk, they probably wont be able to give you the boost. Kinda sucks. But I am glad you get a price break.

how many Ks?

Well...top end I have seen on a 1.5 down connection is 150-200k/second. It really can depend on where and what you are downloading.

I doubt they will pricematch, but wouldn't hurt to ask.

I have verizon phone service. Dont have dsl yet. How much should i expect to pay? 34.99 or 29.99

I'm assuming that the standard price for 1500/128 will be the 34.95. If you get on the variations package you will get the $5 discount per month.

Others seem to be reporting a promo of $5/month off for 6 months for signing up. So, you can either sign up for dsl and get the discount for 6 months or switch to the variations package and get it for as long as you keep the plan.

Dude i still hate dsl. ITs the only thing in my apt building. I wish i had a Cable moden like at my house which gives me real time dl's or upwards 200-400kbs. O well Whatever

I heard from a local new station KFWB said verizon will lower their DSL price, I don't know how soon, but if they lower below $29.99, it will be hot price, consider AOL or earthlink charging $24.xx for their dialup service.
