In the lower right is a applet called 'Tweal Test' and what it will do is scan your registry, and also test your line speed. It will then ask you for some Info. and what your advertised speed should be. It will then give you a specialized report on the #'s that you should input to tweak your system to, and the FAQ's that tell ya how to do it.

Any other questions, see my post above.

Verizon customer service has never been good... what do you expect for one of the former evil Bells? They still treat their customers like piss and I indirectly work for them as an "internal" customer. They treat me like crap too.

That's neither here nor there... it's about time they lower prices. Hopefully this will encourage Cablevision/Optimum to keep their prices low. Methinks they've gotten to overconfident about their lower price for more speed. I get around 3-5Mbps down/990kbs up for $29.99 under contract so it can't be raised until the end of the year. Cablevision is raising other people to $35 or $39/month now... when monopolies fight each other, it's good for the consumer.

Done that before. All I get are 🙂's. So I'm assuming my connection is as good as it's gonna get.

I called yesterday... I was told that the local center hasn't received the upgrade yet, and thus I do not qualify as of right now. She told me to call back in a couple weeks and double check. Boy do I hope I get the speed increase. For some reason, Verizon has been crap for me lately.

I'm going to order for my new apartment soon, but I noticed that the website still says 768, not 1.5. Is this something you have to call for?

Well you need to live in certain states to that Verizon offers the in-state Long Distance calling place. This and their local package are bundled toghether and are called 'Veriations All' Package for $55 a month plus taxes. This is how the 1.5Meg DSL plan then comes down to $29.95 a month. Basically with the VA package you can call ANYWEHRE in the USA and Canada anytime of day/night and there is no per minute charge, just the montly plan charge. Pretty niffty. If you can get the VA package I really do think it is worth it, as I probably already save about $30 amonth on my overall bill.

BUT:

As for the DSL

There is no free initial Month

And you have to pay $12.95 for the hardware to be shipped to you.

But, I mean for what you get in the end, the above two thingies, who really cares right ;-)

Darnit well I was all set to switch from cable to this dealio when I did the prequal. thing and it kept coming up 768/128. So I called VOL and they confirmed I can only get 768. So then I went on DSLreports and find out I'm like 14K feet from the CO and 768 is as good as it gets with Verizon.

I get maybe 700-900 with cable so this DSL dealio just doesn't appeal. Now, 1.6Mbit would appeal but looks like it's out of reach for me. Darn.

Don't mean to cr*p this thread, but I just had a great experience with Britsys.net. I signed up for their "Cable buster" 18-month prepaid package, which comes out to be $99 for setup and equipment, plus ~$36/month. I get 1500/768 sustained throughput. Best thing was, I faxed in my order on Friday an hour before they closed. The equipment was FedEx'ed to me and arrived the next Thursday. The router they shipped (a Cisco 678) was configured as a router, so on Friday I called their tech support. A live person answered within 5 seconds and reconfigured the router to be a bridge, and I was up and running with my wireless router 7 days from the day I placed my order. I'll post a review on dslreports after a few weeks when I've monitored the stability.

Woohoo, just signed up. Thanks to the original poster (my father decided to get the Verizon Freedom Package with DSL so it's $29.99 a month) I've spent 5 hard long years on dialup. It's now time to download my pr0n instantly 🙂

I would so get DSL if they freaking provided it where I live! I live in a city where the average income is lik 70k - but maybe 1/4 of it has coverage at best and for the past three years I've gotten the same "its coming" bs. 🙁

I'm not too thrilled with Verizon right now.

I called for the upgrade and I was told that a)I only test for 768 and b) they don't know if I was close enough to the main line or whether the line itself was not capable of the higher speed. Some helpdesk there.

Also, the had a new price in effect since last December. I had fulfilled my 12 month contract in October and they never said they now had lowered their prices. If I hadn't called them up, I guess they would have kept charging me $49 a month. Now that is crappy customer service!

And too, the stuff they offer free in home networking is not really free. It is misleading. (http://www22.verizon.com/ForHomeDSL/channels/dsl/home+networking.asp) Wait, I see they rewrote parts of the ad to say they don't charge for addtional computers at home (originally they wrote "free home networking"). If you want to pursue one of the home networking options, they'll sell you the necessary hardware. And not a ATHD hot deal either. But they said they'll give you email and phone support for Verizon purchased equipment (insinuating they won't help with OEM itmes?).

Anyway, I'm very disappointed in the business that is Verizon.

Go over to DSL reports. You can enter in your address and it'll tell you how far away you are from the CO. if it's < 12k feet (or is it 15k?) then you know it's a capability issue and not distance related.

As far as not calling you to tell you the price dropped, that's pretty standard for any service-related company. I've never been contacted about a price drop for cable, phone, cell phones, etc. Kind of works both ways tho. If the price was hiked, you'd get "grandfathered" in on the old price. Same thing happens tho when the price goes down.

Yup. I did that, as suggested. Even called support. My line is less than 6K from CO.
Helpdesk doesn't know why I can't get higher access.

I called also since I was at 10.5K and I should be OK. They said my CO was the problem so my next question was could I cancel my account and sign up again, taking a chance to see if I could get on the ATM side of my CO. They gave me a phone # to the local CO and I found out they were strictly a Frame Relay setup so no go on that end run. I have most of my problems on the upload side of things but the cable access in this area has slowly been degrading so I will continue to wait for another player to enter the market in my area. Optimum Online is the fastest at a good price but hasn't reached the neighborhood yet.

verizon DSL internet has always been great to me

i had it last summer for 49.99 with 768/128 and, although the price sucked, the connection was awesome

this summer i placed an order again (35$ for 1.5/128) and the modem was sent after 3 days, the next day the line worked, and im getting ~1300/135. it is awesome

however, their Customer service is hooooooooooorrrible, but iguess thats to be expected with ALL broadband companies

I got my modem in yesterday, didn't bother trying it until today. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DSL rocks!! DSLreports says I'm getting 1041 kbps, one of the other ones I'm getting 941kbps. A HUGE improvement over 56k. I love this!!!!!!!!! Thank you to the original poster!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm. A friend lives two doors down from me (on a different street) and he hasn't seen anything in his verizon email yet.

I have SBC DSL and since Verizon pulled this stunt, they've lowered their rates as well. Right now I'm scheduled to upgrade on June 6th from 384K down to 1.5M down w/o a price change $29.99/mo.
