:thumbsup::thumbsup:

That's what I'm talking about. I hope I don't have any neighbors within a good square mile when I buy a place, but a half mile would be acceptable too. :awe:

I love not having neighbors!
Closest one is over 1/2 mile away, I can barely see the top of their barn.
My house is over 1/4 mile off the road, rarely even hear traffic, unless it's an unusually loud vehicle.
Best part is being able to pee outside ANYWHERE I want, whenever I want! LOL:biggrin:

OP and everyone who lives in the country ... where do you live and how much land do you have? I almost bought an amish-built country home on 40 acres last month. I'm tired of living in a sub-division in a city and am wanting some country living ...

Central PA. I'm living in what used to be the "country", but has since turned into mostly subdivisions. I just found a nice house on a few acres of land with a lot of privacy. You definitely pay a premium to get lots of land near town though. It goes for about 100K/acre where I'm at.

Yep, owning land has no disadvantages, like living in the city has zero advantages. You guys and your blanket statements...

Exactly what I told my late wife I wanted when we were looking for a house. Got it, too! Now excuse me while I whip it out and water!

I'm within a 10-15 minute drive of the Hospital, Mall, Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, 5 different gas stations, 4 grocery stores, a bew pub, and about a dozen chain restaurants.

Sounds like the city is closing in on you.

The only thing I disliked about living in the country in Pennsylvania was the utter lack of connectivity options. We finally got DSL in 2006 and it was a wonderful 800kbit connection. :p I was so happy when they upgraded us to 1.5mbit!

Yeah, that's the only thing that will suck. We've come to terms with the fact that we'll most likely have no options but a satellite connection on the farm. Oh well, it's not as bad as some people make it seem, as long as you're not doing things where latency comes into play(like gaming).

Which is a good thing for my property value. There are million dollar houses going up around me and land is pushing 100K/acre. I've got my piece of nice private land, they can expand around me all they want. :colbert:

Yeah we have to use satellite for TV and surprisingly I have good 4G verizon coverage so we use LTE Broadband for internet.

I bought a house with an acre of land and that's all I want. It's a lot of work just keeping my acre up and all the silly ass flower beds. Yesterday afternoon was spent raking leaves up. I would do it again just because I hated with a passion walking out my front door and being literally steps away from my neighbors in all directions. I feel it's a good buffer from my neighbors. It sucks only having dsl 1.5mb download and .6 upload though. Maybe one day I can get my uverse back.

I live in NC about 45 miles from the coast. Rural area , town has a population of 15K, one stoplight type of town. We have a grocery store, gas station, hardware store and that is about it. If you want anything more than that you have to drive about 15-20 miles. I can walk outside at night and without moonlight it is so dark you could walk into a tree. You can basically do anything you like, if you want to dig a hole in the ground, toss in some hardwood and burn it down to some nice coals and throw on a whole hog , you can do it. If kids go outside they can ride bikes, climb trees, yell and scream till they get tired and nobody will care. Dogs run free without a leash or being tied up, cats do the same if you want. It is just total freedom.

Now the downsides:
You need to be somewhat self reliant. If you call 911 for medical expect it to take upwards of 30 minutes. Calling for police takes about the same amount of time sometimes longer. A lot of people here hunt and have guns that double as protection should it be needed due to the time it takes for police to arrive. Fire department is completely volunteer so your home can burn down before they get to the station and drive out to your home. If your car breaks down and you don't have someone to come get you, you are screwed or you better start walking. Someone could easily live in some of these areas and never see another person. Water is provided by wells , which is nice because it is all you want to use for the cost of electricity but bad because if your pump breaks or freezes in winter you have no water, same for electric outages. Electric outages take much longer to get fixed . Internet is poor, really poor in some areas. My brother can only get 512Kb DSL for the max package, most still use 28K dialup .

You get a lot of freedom but you also have to pay for that freedom by providing yourself the things that cities have.

No it does suck. I went from uverse 12mb to dsl 1.5 with actual speeds at 1.3mb and saying it sucks is an understatement. I'm use to downloading 150mb worth of updates, downloading games from steam, while streaming a hd feed from Netflix all at the same time. Now I can barely get a freaking web page to pull up if windows is getting updates. Not to mention the constant disconnects. I haven't even tried online gaming. I'd probably end up smashing my monitor after a few minutes.

also you need to plan in the winter. the roads are not always clear. the one guy with a huge 4x4 will ask i fwe need something when he goes into town.

I have been thinking of putting in a whole house generator. i have a small one that will run the fridge and heater. but it won't last long.

as for satalite. for TV its fine. i never had a issue with it. For internet? fuck it sucks. i was sopposed to have a 1.5 connection. I rarely got that. Also if you went over 1gig of download in a month they locked you down to 33.6 download rates. That's if it was even working! it would go out in any kind of bad weather. When it did work yeah it was faster then dialup (had that as backup) but it still sucked.

About 3 years ago we had a company come in with "wireless dsl" its 6m (they just upped it from 3m) and pretty reliable but it does have a 1 gig cap (think they upped that to 3) with free VOIP!
