Tourists take photos of each other in the flooded Piazza San Marco in Venice December 1, 2008. Large parts of Venice were flooded on Monday as heavy rains and strong winds lashed the lagoon city, with sea levels at their highest level in 22 years. Ferry and water taxi services in the city were suspended and Venice's mayor urged people to stay indoors. Tourists and residents struggled to get across the city over raised walkways. The Centro Maree, which forecasts water levels, said sea levels in the Adriatic rose 1.56 meters (5.1 ft) - a level not seen since 1986.

I loved Venice when my wife and I went on our honeymoon in 2007. Perfect end to the trip.
 
Man, I hope this city doesn't sink before I get to see it...

On a side note, I saw maps of Boston the other day that showed the actual landmass when the city was founded... 200+ years ago my office was underwater!
 
That is amazing, guess they dont have the same sewage in the water problem that happens everytime the gulf of mexico cities flood.
 
I lived in Venice for a couple months, and went through acqua alta once or twice, though not nearly as bad as that, of course. Not being a permanent resident, I didn't have a pair of those giant boots like the postman was wearing, so you just have to try to avoid it if you can (if the water isn't too high, and only flooding parts of the city), or just jump in anyway.

I know, just by looking at the pictures one would think that the people of Venice were use to water! 😛
 
Well, to be fair they are mostly on stilts, someone must have had lowered all the stilts. I blame global warming.

What I vividly remember about Venice is not its endless canals, or its romantic cobble stone walkways, or its courtyards where locals hangout drinking their afternoon coffees watching the legion of pigeons that feed on the scrums of bread that people throw on the ground, or its awe inspiring cathedrals of antiquity, not even the gondolas with the heart warming voices of the cabana boys, it was the smell.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. When I went to Venice I distinctly remember the smell of sewage in a number of small side ally ways (nothing really serious, and nothing that changes my mind about how AMAZING a place that is!!!) . I don't believe the city has a proper sewage system.

I don't know about that, if I'm EVER a business owner and there's water up to my knees (and rising) in my fuckin store. you won't see me smiling in pictures. These people are a little too okay with massive flooding.

That city has been flooding on and off for centuries. i think it's admirable that they are able to keep their cool. i would love to visit that city again.
