Well, to be fair they are mostly on stilts, someone must have had lowered all the stilts. I blame global warming.
What I vividly remember about Venice is not its endless canals, or its romantic cobble stone walkways, or its courtyards where locals hangout drinking their afternoon coffees watching the legion of pigeons that feed on the scrums of bread that people throw on the ground, or its awe inspiring cathedrals of antiquity, not even the gondolas with the heart warming voices of the cabana boys, it was the smell.
I love Venice, and it is my favorite place on Earth, but sometimes I'm walking around somewhere, smell an open sewer, and think "ah, smells like Venice!"
