I am vegetarian strictly for health reasons.
I feel so much better, with far more energy on a plant-based diet.
Eating for "taste" alone IMO is not what to base your food choices on any more than choosing to "feel" good by doing drugs.  If taste was the sole reason for choosing foods, we'd all be eating ice cream, cake, chocolate and potato chips exclusively (oops, I forgot, many people do).
"Taste" is acquired.  
"Protein" from animal sources being healthy for humans is a myth.  Plant sources can provide everything necessary for healthy life.
If your are talking about a "normal" lifespan with cancer and heart disease, you can have it.
