i've been veggie for about 10yrs now.... i used to be a militant vegetarian but now i dont care what ppl eat as long as they show me the same respect.
vegetarianism is much more wide spread in the uk compared to the us (wider selection in the supermarket and in a restaurant), and the meat alternatives have come a looooong way in the past decade. while i do miss meat a lot sometimes (i was a big chicken fan), there *is* something to be said for not having fat/grease in ur meal (layer of grease in a pasta sauce or gristle pieces or something).
and humans are omnivores; if we were supposed to eat an entirely meat-based diet we'd have short intestines to digest the meat instead of the long winding ones that we do.
