vegetable-oil cooled computer

Distribution transformers are often oil cooled. You've seen 'em - the big green things often behind office buildings, stores and other buildings, sometimes surrounded by wire fencing. The entire wire transformer core is immersed in oil. These beasts run in the thousands to millions of volt-amps (KVA, MVA). They can easily run at 55 to 65 degrees C above the ambient temperature.

I suspect some of the "cans" you see on utility poles may be oil filled too, at least the inductor banks; dunno about capacitor banks.

I think I've seen this work with distilled water also.

This wouldn't work, or atleast not for very long. Unless your computer is completely metal free. Water would begin to ionize any metal (Galvanic corrosion), and eventually deep six your components. I'd love to try it with 3M's fluorinert, but that stuff is expensive.

I planned to do something like that this summer... would be a very fun project, I think. Great choice for a silent PC!

Of course, doing so would have required money and effort, so I never got around to it.

I take it this person got his idea from the mineral oil immersed systems that appear at some conferences/conventions? What's not immediately apparent to me is why the oil is good at conducting heat away from the CPU...I'd think that you'd need at least a decent aquarium pump in order to circulate the oil well enough so that it pulls the heat away from the CPU.

EDIT: And T, the last letter is 'T'.

Really interesting.
Extremely cool.
Potentially mind-shattering!
Overly unnecessary.
Stupid not to use a prescott and deep fry stuff.

Tasty suggestion, Crescent13

Haha you guys get a 10 for that

They should have used peanut oil, or at least canola or corn. They all have a higher smoke point than vegetable oil. 🙂

wouldn't it smell?

I guess the smell depends on how pure or refined the oil. I guess you would also want an oil with a high viscosity and low thermal breakdown. Otherwise, you'd have to change out the vegetable oil much more frequently, as it would lose its ability to remove heat over time.

 That's funny.

Yeah, I saw AMD had an oil cooled computer at some large overclocking convention in Texas.. Was kinda intresting at the time.

Why does everyone feel the need to point out: "IT'S A REPOST!", like it's a bad thing? Who cares? Does it bother you? Hit that fancy little button depicting an arrow pointing left in the top left corner of your browser. Your troubles have now left the screen and you can continue browsing the AT forums. Just don't hit the forward button. 😕

I missed the post then. I see it now. I find it interesting. It has made my day just a little bit better, plus it has expanded my knowledge on the uses of cooking oil.

I for one am glad this is a repost, and am grateful to Kaido from re-posting it. Thank you Kaido. 🙂
