What is your opinion of vegans? I am wondering because from what I have seen most people don't understand why some/most people are vegans.

I just decided to go vegan, after realizing/seeing what goes on in the factory farms (some may say those are lies, etc). I would still eat, say, a fish if I caught it myself (so you could say I am not vegan, but the fact is, I never go fishing). I am not completely against eating meat, but the fact is, I couldn't kill a cow myself. I wouldn't be able to bring myself to do it. I understand that "we are the stronger species, top of the food chain, etc" but is that any justification to the inhumane way we "process" animals for food? I think not. I can't eat meat that has been processed that way, knowing what goes on. It makes me sick.

Flame on if you wish.

I'm a vegan because of economic reasons. :)

I just realized that I haven't consumed meat in over a week. I've had nothing but rice, vegetables, ramen noodles, and PBJ sandwiches.

Don't you eat steer, not cow? Cows are female and have softer tissue than male steers. Thats what my foods techer told me.

I used to be Vegan. It was too expensive and I always felt like crap, plus I did really agree with the ideals of it.

Independant thinking is a good thing.

I lost 80 pounds being vegan though.

Ok, my opinion of Vegans is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, regardless of how wrong it is. ;) That being said, I have no problem w/ people who are vegan b/c they don't like the idea of eating meat, but the PETA/ALF extremes... well, they are retarded and should be fed to carnivorous plants.

so.. if you would eat fish, would you eat a deer that had been hunted? In which case would you eat a deer that had been raised for the purpose of being eaten? As for processing animals for food.. at least humans kill them first. perhaps we should accuse lions of being unethical for eating wildebeast live.

If I hunted the deer myself, if I pulled the trigger and shot the deer, yes I would eat it. It lived freely, and I killed it as quickly as possible, humanely IMO. No I wouldn't, because for one, it was born into death, you could say, although if wasn't mistreated, and killed humanely, I may would (but you can't quite say that about commercial slaughterhouses can you). You should read up on the truth of factory farming. Sometimes the animals are left for hours in pain, they are beated, whipped, while they lie dying on the ground. It is pretty horrible stuff. See what I am talking about?

I don't consider what the lion does, to be anyworse, infact it is much better. Of course they are "killing it live", you sort of have to. You do know they go for the jugular? I highly doubt a Wildebeast doesn't live for more than a minute after being taken down by a few lions. Not to mention the lions had to catch it themsevles, when was the last time you or I killed a cow?

i don't get it, you couldn't kill a cow, but you could kill a fish or a deer?

aside from that... good for you, though isnt' it possible to get meat and animal products from places that aren't cruel to their animals?

Congratulations, I'm not a vegan but I keep my meat consumption to a minimum. People like you encourage me to do better than I am now. If you put just a little bit of thought into it you can be much healthier than than the average person on a meat heavy diet, not to mention avoiding the cruelty issues and helping the environment. Imagine if there were more responsible humans.

I've killed my fair share of cows, pigs and turkeys. :) See, I grew up on a farm. My parents had perhaps 200 pigs until I was 17 when they bought a fairly large turkey farm. are farm animals "left for hours in pain, they are beated, whipped, while they lie dying on the ground"? I think that is a huge overgeneralization of all farms, based upon a few bad ones. Are all arabs crazed airplane flying terrorists? No, of course not. At the same time I know there have been times where of a flock of say 6,000 turkeys there may be two or three which were laying on the floor dying. Welcome to life. If you have 6000 of anything chances are some will die. Of course, this is much difference than being abused. I hate animal abuse, but I do not think raising food should be considered abuse. There are ants that farm aphids, is this any different?

My opinion: Eat what you want, but don't push your damn ideas on me. If I want to kill an animal and eat it you can bet your ass i'm going to. If you want to be a vegan, more power to you.

But in the case of ants, the existance is synergystic.. The ants don't actually grow nor kill the aphids, they just harvest their sweet excretions.

Anyway, I agree that the meat industry is deplorable. All you have to do is realize the ammount of meat out there on store shelves to realize the scale..

For me, it's not really that the animals are killed per se.. It's not like they're ripped apart in some machine alive or something, but it's the conditions they live in.. The only way to have the ammount of meat we do is to warehouse the animals..

I think chickens are some of the worst. They're in cages barely big enough to fit in, and their skin constantly rubs on the galvanized metal wire.. creating cancers and lesions. :frown: They're stacked from floor to ceiling in cages with open bottoms, allowing all the droppings from above to fall on the chickens below.

We buy organic meat. You would be absolutely shocked at the taste difference. It tastes like it should..

Correct me if I'm wrong.

You are a college age person. You are active in the community. You feel you can make a difference. You see sooooo many things wrong with the world and you think you can fix every last one, or at least contribute to the cause...you feel guilty if you don't "do something." You wear Birkenstocks. <--maybe reaching w/that one

You feel that "what we do to those poor animals" is wrong, as it's not what nature intended. You feel that to make deer season a fair fight, the deer should have rifles too.

Well, there is a reason why we are at the top of the food chain; superior intelligence. From the moment that first knuckle dragging, ape-like ancestor picked up a stick and clubbed that animal into submission, our rise to the top began.

If you want to have a "personally clean conscience and soul" that is nobody's business but yours. IOW, please don't come back here, soapbox in hand and tell me how evil I am b/c I eat red, bleeding, still moving meat. I don't begrudge anyone their beliefs, but the second you try and force your ideals on me, I'll be all over you like a bad suit.

Are we clear? :)

Peachy.

Can I use this next time someone tells me that deer should have rifles?

I can never come up with anything that good!

Is that you you americans do things?? In canada there are no chickens raised for human consumption under those conditions. It is not financially feasible to treat your animals that poorly. There are laying hens that are raised in stacks of cages maybe 5 or 6 high, but they are given a fairly high square foot allotment. I think your example is a bit of a "worst case" senario, perhaps an old farm that was granted a grandfathered exemption from new rules.

Oh Michael, you couldn't be more wrong. Let me correct you, oh wise one.

Not in college yet, younger. Definitely NOT active in the community. Never have felt I can make a difference. I know I couldn't possibly fix ONE of the things wrong with the world, so I don't try. I have never felt guilty if I don't do something "to make a difference". Never owned birkenstocks, I wear cargo shorts and new balances.

Do I feel killing them is wrong? No, of course not. Do I feel that the way animals in the commercial meat industry are handled is wrong? Yes. Did you even read the entirety of my post? I knew someone would bring up "top of the food chain" and I know we are at the top. Wrong on the deer. Where did I say we should arm the animals? I feel you are making too many generalizations based off of past experiences with vegans/vegetarians.

You don't need to explain to me why we are superior, I mentioned that already, I am not an idiot. You are the one being defensive here. I haven't yet said eating meat is wrong. Why are you so insecure? Keep in mind I have eaten meat all the way up until yesterday. I hoped that what I said in the first post would keep everyone like you at ease, in knowing I wouldn't preach against the evils of eating meat. You need to lighten up dude, seriously.

Clear?
;)

moby's a vegan. not sure why that was the first thing that came to my head but oh well. there are quite a few vegans at my high school. I think there's some sort of club. the vegan who makes the most noise about it is VERY pale and skinny... not really good advertising if you ask me.

Yeah, I read your post. And??????

I felt the need to speak my piece. I did.

So, you've "been a Vegan" for all of 24 hours, eh? We'll see how long it lasts.

BTW, a TRUE Vegan not only does not eat meat, but does not wear leather or animal hides of any kind either.

/hands you your loincloth made of tree bark

Here, put this on. Preach to the masses. :D
