Two vegans who fed their 11-month-old daughter only mother's milk went on trial in northern France on Tuesday charged with neglect after their baby died suffering from vitamin deficiency.

Sergine and Joel Le Moaligou, whose vegan diet forbids consuming any animal product including eggs and cow's milk, called the emergency services in March 2008 after becoming worried about their baby Louise's listlessness.

When the ambulance arrived at their home in Saint-Maulvis, a small village 150 kilometres (90 miles) north of Paris, the baby was already dead.

The ambulance workers called the police because the child was pale and thin, weighing 5.7 kilos (12.5 pounds) compared to an average eight kilos for her age.

The baby had only been fed on the milk of her mother, who was aged 37 at the time.

An autopsy showed that Louise was suffering from a vitamin A and B12 deficiency which experts say increases a child's sensitivity to infection and can be due to an unbalanced diet.

"The problem of vitamin B12 deficiency could be linked to the mother's diet," said Anne-Laure Sandretto, deputy prosecutor in the city of Amiens where the trial is taking place.

The couple has been charged with "neglect or food deprivation followed by death" and face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

Poor little kid.

Is vitamin B12 deficiency a common problem in vegan diets?

WTF? ugh poor kid. while the parents are idiots i can't see putting them in jail for 30 years. they have to live with knowing the choice they made killed the kid.

You can nurse while being a vegan, you just need to open your diet to ALL vegan options, not the ones you probable like.

Or just take a multi-Vit with your biggest meal. Even my wife that eats all foods still took her Multi-Vit for several months after giving birth to our son.

And yes them being arrested was the right thing. Her being a vegan is not enough to notice your new-born is losing weight and not developing correct. Red flags should have gone up long before the new-born died.

Yeah, it's very common.

My doctor once told me that almost all cases of vitamin deficiency fall into one of two groups: Vegetarians (typically vitamin B) and muslim women (typically vitamin D).

Point is that their doctor would certainly have told them of this risk, but it seems they chose to ignore it, and as a result a baby died ...

Just goes to help prove that people are not designed to be vegans.

Steak, it does a body, and a nursing baby good.

I don't understand. The baby was fed only milk, and the baby died because the mother lacks vitamins....... so why is the mother still alive?

Perhaps adults aren't as susceptible to problems stemming from vitamin deficiency. Or perhaps it has something to do with the production of breastmilk itself, such that the mother was fine, but the breastmilk, due to her diet, was compromised.

I can totally see putting them away in jail for 30 years. Idiots like them should also be forcibly sterilized, and they should be required to undergo daily high voltage electroshock therapy.

Nah. Humans have horrendously bad digestive systems. We can consume lots of poisons without dying (nicotine, caffeine) but we can't live on things that are not poisons (grass, leaves). Bovines and horses can eat grass, oats, wheat and they do fine. A human eating the same thing withers away and dies.

You can, it's just a pain in the ass for them to do it and actually remain/become healthy. Also, vegans have a lot harder of a time then vegetarians.... I can understand moral implications of why someone would want to be one, but the stated "healthy" reasons are bogus.

obviously a poor choice by the parents but I think this

The couple has been charged with "neglect or food deprivation followed by death" and face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

would be taking it too far. parents have already been punished for their ignorance. I hope the court system isn't so idiotic as to actually seek the maximum sentence.

All of which tells me that Humans are meant to have at least some meat in their diets.

I understand the philosophical reasons for wanting to go Vegan, but as a matter of physiology: If your diet forces you to either suppliment or suffer for not doing so, then your diet is wrong.

My understanding of it is that the vegan diet used to be a valid option since enough fecal matter or bugs were in the vegetables to provide the necessary B12 (you don't need much at all). But now in the first world, our vegetables are too clean for an un-supplemented vegan diet.

In this day and age you could probably live off sawdust with the right vitamin supplements (polysorbate #80 anyone?)

I've known a few vegans and some were a bit loony. You know the type, paranoid about everything from the government poisoning the water with fluoride to vaccinations. The type to kill themselves given enough rope.

I wouldn't call the human digestive system horrendously bad. It falls somewhere between that of a carnivore and herbivore, indicating that we are meant to be omnivores. Which also happens to be common sense to most people.
