For a budget chocolate fix, try Nestles Signatures Treasures. They're not listed on that site, but my wife got me some dark chocolate mint. OMG, they taste like $10.00 per pound chocolate for a fraction of the price!

have you ever purchased REAL vanilla extract?

Of course! It's too cheap to bother buying imitation. Hell, real maple syrup is more valuable.

For good, real good, chocolate, I buy Gorant. Godiva is overrated and overpriced. So, who makes your favorite vanilla?

pound of beans

http://www.suttonsbaytrading.com/Flavorings_and_Oils/20819.html

1 oz of extract

http://www.theposter.com/vanilla2.html

I found some cheaper beans and extract

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000CDEPE/103-3615699-9476633?v=glance&n=3601141&s=gourmet-food

here is some that are cheaper. but still $15 for 8 ozs.

and your question was
"This is stupid. WTF ever paid $10.00 per pound for vanilla anything?"

and I showed you. so I don't know why you're rolling your eyes.

you even admitted tio buying it yourself. "Of course! It's too cheap to bother buying imitation"

That is the best part!

but I don't know what vanilla extract goes for in your area, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Maybe vanilla extract is REALLY cheap in your area for some strange reason.

I was also looking at maple syrup. The real stuff does not cost more. the most expoensive stuff I found OUTSIDE OF GIFT BASKETS was $50 for 1/2 gallon.

well choose Chocolate because you can easily add things to it....like CHOCOLATE!

Why would you add more chocolate to chocolate when you could add something better.... like VANILLA

thats the whole point ... the more chocolate the better.

you can't add vanilla to vanilla can you?!?

Madagascar or Mexico

Look for plump beans with what looks like a like "dusting" of white flecks. Those white flecks are a great sign of quality.

Ornery, vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world, right behind saffron. "This is stupid. WTF ever paid $10.00 per pound for vanilla anything?" and "It's too cheap to bother buying imitation. Hell, real maple syrup is more valuable." are remarks of pure ignorance, nothing more.

I personally enjoy Valrhona or Lindt chocolate btw, though sometimes I find Valrhona a little too bitter to eat straight.

Bunch of wieners! HTF can you compare vanilla extract to finished chocolate products, which sell for well over $10.00 per pound, if you're stupid enough to pay so much. Compare cocoa beans to vanilla beans, or cocoa butter to vanilla extract, if you want, but who the hell eats it like that? As if that's what this poll was about anyway.

Oh yeah, and maple syrup is also an expensive, finished product. Let me know which brand of vanilla syrup to buy, to pour over my ice cream.

IIRC, the poll was "Vanilla or Chocolate?" not "Which syrup do you like better on your ice cream?".

nfusi0n brand, infuse some cream with vanilla and some other sweet spices, and finish with a light whip to frothiness, no peaks.

Quit whining about vanilla

Look at your Nestle Milk Chocolate Treasures Creamy Caramel Flavor

Ingredients
Milk Chocolate Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Chocolate, Milk, Lactose, Milkfat, Soy Lecithin, Vanillin- An Artificial Flavor , Corn Syrup , Sugar , Milk , Butter , Partially Hydrogenated Soybean And/Or Cottonseed Oil With Mono- and Diglycerides , Salt , Natural And Artificial Flavors , Soy Lecithin , Calcium Carrageenan , TBHQ , Citric Acid To preserve freshness

Vanilla is quite a valuable spice, valuable enough to warrant its exclusion from mass market crap

Alcohol should be a staple in everyone's life, and when was the last time you saw chocolate flavored rum...
