I did alot of research on vacuums a while back. I absolutely did not want to buy a Dyson because of the cost and how trendy it is. I researched the Hoover at Walmart thats supposed to be just like the Dyson. I researched Rainbows and Roombas. In the end, I came back to Dyson for one main reason: you should never need to buy any supplies for it...ever. Every other vacuum I was interested in either didn't have a HEPA filter or had one that needed to be replaced. And with the Dyson, you can just wash it off occasionally. There were other factors to the decision but that was the one thing that noone other than Dyson had.

If you get one, get it from LNT with a 20% off coupon.

Man, that's a terrible reason to buy a vacuum. 😀 Bags are crazy cheap.

Someone really needs to invent a thread wiki. Oops, I just did 😛 You know, where all the useful information in a thread can be compiled and easily accessed - I don't want to read through 10+ pages of posts just to find out what the best vacuum is lol. Google, scan this post and implement my software idea into your collective brains!

Dyson is the only vacuum you should by. It really is that good. Plus it never loses suction!

Honestly that's what I've heard too. They are mega expensive but they're supposed to be awesome (~$500).

That's cheap for a good vacuum. My old canister vac costs 2000. Dyson can run circles around that thing.

-edit-
I picked a dyson up for 400. There was a 20% off coupon from bed bath and beyond.

Pardon me if I don't put much stock in the opinion of a guy who spent $2000 on a vacuum that admittedly is not very good. 😉

supplies are incredibly cheap especially with bags at walmart where arm and hammer makes the bags now. even after many years of use you won't match the price of a dyson by buying supplies. at 5 bucks of bags a year or so theres no way to care about that kind of thing.

But the thing is, I won't have to make that trip to Walmart every few months (depending on frequency of vacuuming). And 5 years from now, who knows how difficult it will be to find the bag I would need? But its a BS argument in the first place. They don't cost that much just because of the supplies issue. If we were comparing otherwise identical vacuums, with one not needing supplies but costing an extra XXX dollars, then you would have an argument and my decision might have been different. The supplies issue was a deciding factor to me, but nowhere close to being the only factor.

I like buying things that make life easier and more self sufficient...

edit: and I paid $260 for mine

That's what FatWallet's QuickSummary feature is for I think, and this would be an excellent use for it, but that requires effort on the part of the posters.

Yeah but just imagine the possibilities...all the technical info on AT's forums would be available at your fingertips without having to dig through masses of posts.

Oh I can imagine the possibilities... (see sig 😉)

My wife got a dyson
I got a shop vac
WHile the dyson is THE BEST HOME VACUUM out there... I'll pit my Shop-Vac against it any day 🙂

Mentioning Dyson in a Vacuum thread is like saying Sony in a console thread.

Mine kicks ass. My Dyson that is. Anyone mentioning Consumer Reports parrot-fashion should just take one home for a month and STFU.

Dyson here also.
If you read your fine print on the Linnens and Things coupon or a BB&Beyond coupon, they aren't supposed to apply to a Dyson vacuum. Someone once told me it was because the manufacturer never offers rebates to the store. Luckily when I bought mine both the cashier and I were clueless to this fact, and I got my 20% off.

Best Vacuum I've ever had to pick up after my 2 Lab Retrievers.

Well you know, for something other than for noobs finding out why we keep saying "SPIDER!!" 😀

How does the Dyson bagless vacuum system work - do you take out the cartridge and rinse it out in your sink or something?

See, my intention was that people would use it for useful stuff. But very few people ever put useful stuff on it, and that's why it sucks. 🙂

Go create an article about Air Hogs or Picco Zs. And I'll edit it to say DO NOT BUY A PICCO Z AT HOBBYTRON.COM BECAUSE THEY'RE A BUNCH OF SCAMMERS WHO TRY TO PASS OFF KNOCK OFFS AS THE REAL THING.

The whole thing is so ingeniusly designed. Every part can be taken off and cleaned including the HEPA filter. I just rinse the canister in the sink if it ever gets too dirty....takes one minute to clean it.

Interesting. I have been planning on Bluetooth-controlled Roombas for my home, but maybe I'll take a look at the Dysons...

lol

well, I *did* start the Air Hogs thread, I should take ownership of it...😀

Call up one of those guys at the Kirby Co., have them come out and give you a good carpet cleaning & demonstration, then don't buy. Profit. 😛
At least your rug is clean for a week.

I've got an older Rainbow model that I've had for years and it kicks ass for getting up all the dog hair my Lab sheds all over my hardwood floors, microfiber furniture and car interior.

i have at home a dyson DC15 ball, roomba discovery, dirt-devil broomvac, and eureka handheld for the stairs. all have their uses and all do their job very well.

If Dyson's were metal instead of that cheap plastic crap they would rule. Of course they would cost $15,000. The Air Force would be Mister Dyson's number one customer!

Had a rainbow... it was awesome. Pain in the neck to fill the container with water, dump it out when done, etc. Too much effort, especially if you just have to spot clean a small area. Still, it worked great.

Roomba... wtf. That thing is horrible, except for keeping up on the dog hair. Apparently, good, thick deep plush is too much for it - it can't handle half of our floors. It does a pretty good job on the wood floor though.

We have a kenmore something or other... Yellow upright. That thing does an awesome job, and was only $150. I'd highly recommend it, but we had one part go bad on it, that probably shouldn't have. (Covered under warranty.)
