My parents used to have an Oreck XL2 but got rid of it because it wasn't very good. They got a Dyson a couple years ago and have been very happy with it.

And Consumer Reports did say Dyson isn't great.

Or to put it in YoYo terms - cleaner floors through marketing!

That is not what they said. They said Dyson was very good and was one of the top performer, but one of the Hoovers was less than half the cost and performed as well.

BTW- I have the $99 Hoover Dyson knockoff from Sam's Club...works REALLY well :) Bit heavy though.

i have the rainbow (have had it for about 7 yrs) and the Dyson (bought it 2 yrs ago). rainbow works fine but never gets used because it's so annoying to use.

we get by with just the dyson fine, no problems.

is it the best available? i don't know and frankly at this point, i don't care because i own it and it works for me. if it ever breaksdown and i have to buy a new one, then i'll research it again.

for now, i'm happy with my purchase.

Honestly that's what I've heard too. They are mega expensive but they're supposed to be awesome (~$500).

500$ is nothing for a vaccume

kirbys and rainbows cost in the thousands

Orecks are awesome. It's sad though... as the design is ajoke. Probably costs $30 for parts and to assemble. But one thing is for sure .. they do a great job compared to most other brands I've used. They also need occasional service.

And the dyson still outperforms them.

The damn kirby canister vac stays upstairs. It works...then I follow behind it with the dyson. Not even a freakin' comparison. You can literally see the difference in the carpet.

Best vacuum ever. ever. Want to take care of you carpet? You get a dyson. I'm serious. It really is THAT FREAKING AMAZING.

As long as we're on this topic...

1. What's a quality carpet cleaner to get? My parents had a carpet washer that we hooked up to the kitchen sink and shampooed the carpet with every year or six months or so.

2. My dad has this awesome vacuum in his shop, a skinny Kirby Revolution (I think). It doesn't suck on the bottom, only through the intake pipe - it's like a skinny version of a shop vac. Does anyone make em like this anymore? They are easy to tote up the stairs to get cobwebs and stuff.

Dyson FTW. WE have the 15 animal, and it works better than any vacuum we've ever had, including the $1500 Electrolux canisters my wife was brought up to believe were so great. POSSIBLY the Rainbow or Kirby's are better, but I don't know how, other than MAYBE longevity. I understand the Miele (sp) is an EXTREMELY good vacuum, but have never tried one.
We have 2 dogs and 2 cats, all of whom shed like crazy, and the Dyson gets it all...It's amazing how much that thing gets from what LOOKS like a clean carpet...

if i were to be absolutely truthful, i think the rainbow is a bit better than the Dyson we have, it is better built, the rainbow is built like a tank and will probably run forever, the dyson is mostly plastic.

BUT, the dyson is so much more convenient to use, we never ever pull the rainbow out of storage now. $1500.00 for the rainbow, but we did use it for 6 or 7 yrs, so not a complete waste.

That depends on the type of carpet you have. The Oreck is great for short office type carpet but not for Pyle or Shag carpet. When I first got out of High School, I sold Rainbow vaccumes for short period and I will tell you that they are more hastle then they are worth. The lady who runs the local vac sales and repair shop around the corner from me has aptly calls Dyson the Diesoon cleaner. Because the motors tend to burn out or parts have a habit of repeat breakage.

no doubt, the rainbow is a hassle, but once you set it up, it does vacuum well, and they don't "die"soon as you suggest the dyson might.

as i posted earlier, i have a dyson now, and have been using it for about 2 yrs, we'll see how it works, if i start to have problems in the next couple of years, mb i'll just go with a cheaper hoover and just replace them every few years instead.

but for now, i'm happy with the dyson.

Love my dyson dc07. It's amazing how much pet hair it will pick up after less than a week, and that's with a small short haired dog. Only wish they made it look better than that yellow color they have. DC15 looks really nice though.

Dyson FTW. WE have the 15 animal, and it works better than any vacuum we've ever had

the problem is people generally don't own enough vacuums to have a good comparison.

the animal 15 was rated 16th in this months vacuum cleaner lineup for consumer reports. concentrating on pet hair:p the dysons were rank 16 and 17 with fair to poor performance ratings.
tops were the kenmores and hoover windtunnel 2.
btw its even sadder for dyson since this month they concentrated tests on pet hair. the top vacs only cost 150-300 dollars compared to the dysons 500.

The problem is consumer reports is a load of bull. You can't believe anything they put out. This is the same company that says bose is the best.

We've had a number of vacuums, and the Dyson is the best we've had. My parents thought it was better than their old Kirby, too.

If you can find a coupon, I think the Dyson is the way to go.

The Eureka 4870 that is recommended by CR is indeed a good buy. I believe I paid less than $120 shipped from Amazon. It's not trendy like Dyson but it is 1/3 the price and the Eureka is BAGGED. Bagless vacs are wretched, especially if you have allergies.

Roger on Consumer Reports. I hate that magazine. Mostly old fogeys driving Crown Vic's read that sh!t. And what a bunch of bull malockey it is! :|

Nobody have a central vac? Those things are great.

Even better is the dust collector we have in the wood shop. That thing will suck a matchbox car across the floor (about a foot from the door) and suck it right into the collector. The rattling as it goes through the pipes reminds me of Willy Wonka. :Q

Central vacs are the bomb because the air goes outside. So if you suck up something that smells like sh!t, it isn't blown all through your house. Better vacs have carbon filters but those stop working in a month or so and nobody replaces those damn things.

it differs by product. for audio they don't get into much detail and its more convenience than quality. they clearly don't claim they test that way for audio. anyways, but for simple things like how well a vacuum works they are probably reliable. the simple fact is they do tests in a reasonably scientific method, and it upsets some people who base their opinion on nothing more than an unscientific sample of maybe 2-3 vacuums of differing ages and years apart with no real testing and perhaps a large dose of justifying their expensive purchase:p for 500 dollars you aren't going to get a vacuum with no suction after all, and compared to their old trashed vac it probably impresses them. but the problem is other vacs these days match and exceed that dyson at lower prices. so if you are into throwing your money away for no rational reason, thats great. i think i'll go with consumer reports results:p as its well known they've been sued numerous times and they've always won, so their methods are pretty good. you can get all hung up on bose if you find it easier to believe all their other tests on appliances have zero validity if it makes you feel better:p
