A 20-year-old with a weapons cache that included four AK-47s was arrested after threatening over the Internet to undertake a Virginia Tech-style massacre, authorities said Thursday.

Oregon authorities learned of a March 25 Internet message allegedly posted by Calin Chi Wong in which he threatened to re-enact the Virginia Tech killings. Two days later, Homestead police searched the home Wong shares with his parents and found weapons stacked on shelves in plain view, Detective Antonio Aquino said.

Wong had 13 firearms in all, more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition, some that could pierce armor, and 100 rounds in a feeding clip with bullets "meant to take down aircraft or military machinery," Aquino said. He had hidden two AK-47s in his parents' closet, and his parents said the guns did not belong to them, Aquino said.

...

Aquino said Wong told police that making the threat made him feel good because after "he had thousands of people on the Internet paying attention to him."

Wong told police he was just upset and frustrated and never actually planned a killing spree, Aquino said.

But authorities also found a school book bag with bulletproof vests inside Wong's home, as well as two handguns.

I have no idea what to make of this really--the kid obviously had the weaponry, and it appears the mindset to pull off something Va tech-ish..but would you really post a threat about it if you intended to take action? There are probably tons of such arms transactions taking place over the interweb everyday too, and at least a handful of them are young lowlifes with no positive future..

And how can his parents allow this crazed kid to carry around all this, as he's living right there with them?

Definitely frightening nonetheless.

Do you think someone who plans a killing spree is necessarily thinking clearly? ;)

How about we just allow everybody but frat boys to have guns (beliggerant and drunk) and then every single other time this happens somebody just whips out their pistol and takes him down. If you think there would be standups on campus think again, nobody is that stupid.

actually, allowing more guns on campus like Nevada does would ensure the guy doesn't even think about it, because he knows he won't get anywhere.

 Yeah that's odd.

One possibility - I've seen master closets that have a door at the back that opens to a sort of attic. My master closet has a sloping ceiling that follows the roof line, and when it gets too low to be practical there is a paneled wall with doors that I can open and shove some storage bin in.

The successful ones normally do..just because you're crazy doesn't mean you're not cerebral and concise.

And here we have one who was not successful... connect the dots.

Having lots of guns + ammo doesn't really mean anything. You only need one gun to commit murder. I personally collect firearms so yes I have a lot and a lot of proper ammo. Even having a vest doesn't mean much. I have one as well that I got for free.

The error that he made is making threats. He will never be allowed to own any firearms legally again, and might end up in FPMITAP.

QFT.

I have five guns and at least 5,000 rounds of ammo sitting next to me as we speak, 2,500 of which are .22 LR. Ammo quantity means nothing.

If he would have simply implored Youtube users to leave Britney alone, he could have been on several talk shows by now.

And you have armor-piercing rounds as well? Also, I thought civilians weren't supposed to have bullet-proof vests (maybe it depends by state/city).

I'm glad they're taking this threat serious. Also, the kid's parents sound like complete morons.

You don't even need a gun to commit murder.

Hopefully your situation and his are not quite the same :) although you're right about the threats being what precipitated the arrest. Sadly, he's free on bail. Let's hope he didn't have any other weapons stashed somewhere else.

From the Miami Herald:
"The officers said they found an apartment with weapons on the wall, on the floor and on tabletops including four AK-47s, two sniper rifles, seven semiautomatic pistols and more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition."

Is it so wrong?

When I heard the basics of this story - young Asian male living with clueless parents in Florida, heavily involved with guns, banned from some internet sites for trading practices, mad about getting ripped off in a deal while using his father's accounts - my first thought was...

PAB!

That's not that much in ammo really (or guns if you're a collector, but I don't think he seems to fall under this). Think of it this way, it's pretty easy to go through 100 rounds in a single session at the range. Say you go to the range once a week maybe every other week, that's 2600 rounds a year. Plus, given the cost of ammo, it always makes sense to purchase your ammunition in large lots.
