"The biggest mistake that 3dfx ever did was buy STB"
as a consumer, I'd have to say, NO, because the quality of ALL 3dfx cards went up a fair bit because there was only one design, and therefor the reference drivers worked absolutely perfect.
I think they tried to do it too suddenly, they needed something to fallback on in case it didn't go too well. I still believe that it could have gone better, but oh well.. I can't change it!
as for if nVidia for some reason or another stopped developing the NV20 series cards, they WOULD be in alot of trouble.. we don't know how well their mobile chips will sell, we don't know how good their chipsets will be etc. sure their existing cards will still sell pretty good though.. the kicker is having to pay MS because of cancellation (it's in their contract). nVidia is a TINY company, and 200 Million is alot for them!
finally, I believe that the Voodoo 5 6000 could have it close to 60 FPS at 1600X1200X32 High quality and FSAA 2X on, simply because of those interesting drivers we heard about (and the higher clock speed).
but all this is for naught, as long as things don't get too bad in terms of card quality (3rd parties making them that is), I won't complain.
EDIT: as for Retail not mattering at all, I have to disagree.. this market is generally made of more knowledgeable people, who are the ones who influence the unknowing the most. therefor, we DO have an effect on what OEM's sell to the average person..
because of recent developements with 3dfx, I find that 3dfx is FAR from dead! true a flop with Rampage would hurt them badly (if u ask me), but I don't think it'll be that bad!
this internet thing allows any idiot to voice their opinions, and if enough people say it, it becomes the truth. which is what happened with all these nVidiots online.. not only do u guys drive me insane, you bring every newbie along with u, creating a massive cult! it's very annoying..
