If anyone has trouble getting a file that big, note that WGet can help, especially with the -c option.

The demo should take about 5 to 6 hours on a 56K dialup. Definitely an overnighter, if your connection is stable enough for that.

Apparently I can get another 8Mb for my machine (Dell GX200).

I only ever run at 1024 x 768 x 16 bit colour so would going up to 16Mb actually benefit me ??

Col
It should be playable at 640 x 480 with the settings turned down, judging by my trial with my 8Mb TNT2-Vanta (crippled TNT2). If you run Instant Action you get four bots. Since you have less CPU power, you might try hosting your own LAN game so you can reduce the number of bots by one, to reduce the strain on the CPU.

By the way, I did finally get off my lazy bum and put my GeForce2 GTS-V back in, and it is running much better and with a few visual enhancements. I've been running 50-frag deathmatches with 7 bots in Asbestos and so far I can beat them at the Skilled level.

The secondary fire on the base weapon (the assault rifle) is pretty useless... they should have set up the grenades to explode on impact like in Half-Life. As it is, they bounce around for a while and the target is long-gone. :| The Flak Cannon has gone to the top of my list.

ok lets try seeing if I can run a server for us for a bit seems that you can't get the server locations to come up so you can join without an address so here is what to do go to join lan game press the tilda key ~ and type open 24.31.216.77 I have it set so there is 8 bots if there isn't enough people and 16 players max and 2 observers. The bots are set on third hardest setting. Oh and I have it playing capture the flag also I'm not sure about teleport so check it out and tell me if it needs turned off.

I'll give it a whirl. By "third hardest" I hope you mean "third from the bottom" or it'll be rough going. ;)

I think the next one down is Masterful. It was rough going at times, but my team won both games. That might be a wee bit harder than most people want to go against, when they're against an all-bot team, because the bots have this miraculous power of knowing where you are all the time. :D I'd say one or two notches up from Average is likely to be more popular.

Are you going to run a DM server later? That would be mucho fun... :D I'd vote for Asbestos over Antalus... I like indoor maps.

BTW, I have to go see if I can resurrect a Dell Dimension 8100 that was force-fed SDRAM in its RDRAM slots :Q but I hope to be back and play some more at 3:30PM PST (two hours from now).

Why don't you just use Getright to allow you to download it in bits? ,or alternatively ask for the free Demo UT2003 CD?

I am using Getright, and having it download different parts of the file from dual sources. Otherwise, it wouldn't even max out my 56K dialup (and that is pitiful). :)

Gotta still love 4 minute 24 second downloads of 100MB file! :)

OK...since I'm not a game player, how do I benchmark it (FPS)?

Oh...and I've got my butt kicked so many times it's not funny....so don't laugh! :Q

Engineer,

Run this file (assuming default installation folder)

C:\UT2003Demo\System\Benchmark.exe

Select your res. and hit Benchmark :)

Post results here so we can laugh ;):):p

BTW, that's a dasm fast connection! It took me about 25 mins (512k cable)

I haven't been able to get past 10 seconds of play at Muttley's server before I crash out, various errors and have been submitting the bug reports. It plays fine in Demo mode under all kinds of settings. I'll keep trying, nothing like online match play :D

Flyby: 63.4
Botmatch: 34

Resolution: 1024x768

I guess the depth would be 16bit considering that is what my desktop is at.

GeForce2 Pro 64Meg card...Tyan S2460 with Dual 1.4GHz TBirds....512M Registered DDR.....Running ECCp in the background! :)

Oh well....I don't buy video cards very often....maybe this year for X-mas! :p

I had a ATI 128 Rage Pro that I know would not cut this like what Swirth86 exerienced. I just put a GE4 64 Meg DDR MX440 in and get Flyby 74.796113 and Bots 36.698280. That is with new XP1600. Neither CPU or Video over clocked at this point since I was crashing out online. I'll crank everything back up and see the difference.

Novice
Advanced
Experienced <---- For us old slower types.

any chance of an Instagib DM? :D <---OGWEG

OK, start laughing. :p

1024x768
Flyby = 24.766035
Botmatch = 15.754166

800x600
Flyby = 41.066898
Botmatch = 20.069504

Duron 650@850mhz, 256M PC133 RAM, GeForce 256 32M vid.

With this low of FPS, I don't think I'm going to be playing much online, unless I can find a group of people with similar FPS. :Q

RaySun2Be, my fps is not much higher than that. If anyone starts a private server, I'm all over it :D although IG isn't my strong point (it requires actual aiming skills).
