In this day and age of computers you would think that our own postal service could do better.

Today the usps lost another of my packages.
About the 3rd one in two years.
Shipped from NY on monday, shipped overnight, it was in California on tuesday.

I live in NC.

So I call customer service, they enter the tracking number, yes sir your right, its in CA.
Tell me something I didn't know.

So when will I get the package ?
"Well, sir we will just have to wait to see when its updated."

I remain calm, understanding that the person on the other end just works there.

So I wait, wed, thurs, fri.
The package still shows its in CA.
And what can the USPS do about, absolutely nothing, except wait for it to magically reappear at another site.

If fedex, ups, dhl can all do tracking better, surely the usps can do somehwat better.
So something I really need to finish work for a client is now somewhere in the postal system and only the magical postal fairies know where to find it.

Tracking costs money. USPS offers that option, it's called express mail.

It has got tracking and signature and delivery confirmation.
But they still can't do anything to locate it.

They damaged one of my packages once, but it didn't take much work to get reimbursed for the insurance money. Other than that, I get good service from them.

USPS constantly fucks up putting other peoples' mail and our mail in the wrong boxes at our Apt Complex. I try to have any sensitive stuff sent to my work.

Tracking or Delivery Confirmation?

Not necessarily. I paid for Priority Mail shipping to send a box to my fiancee. It was supposed to be there by Easter. I got charged for Priority, but it turned up a month later, having been shipped Parcel Post.

This was last year.

Actually, the last few times I shipped something with Delivery Confirmation, it was being updated at all of the major mailing hubs.

This was a stab at another user's thread about shipping to Alaska, USPS, and Newegg.

Ah. I didn't bother reading that one. I might have to, now. :p

Maybe you were a glitch in the system :p. Although I don't know a whole lot about the mail systems other than I've seen some of them... they look like a roller coaster for boxes :D

They do that in single-family neighborhoods, too. Carriers are responsible for sorting their own mail, IIRC. You can complain to the local branch, but I don't know if it will help.

USPS
Lifetime mail/packages lost for me. 0
Lifetime late deliveries. Negligible. Other party probably was not home/available @ time of delivery. Off hand I can only recall 4 late packages. But that was the force of nature @ work preventing incoming/outgoing flights from my town.
Lifetime damaged packages. 2
Lifetime packages/letters mailed to me. Countless
Lifetime packages/mail I mailed out. Countless

DHL
Lifetime packages lost for me. 1
Lifetime late deliveries. 100%
Lifetime damaged packages. 1
Lifetime outgoing packages. 0
(on a side note, I only had 2 items shipped to me from them in my life. One from a company, the other from a member here @ AT)

FedEx
Lifetime packages lost for me 8.
Lifetime late deliveries. 100%
Lifetime damaged packages. 5 iirc
Lifetime packages sent to me. ~100 ~8% loss, 100% late deliveries, ~5% damaged.
Lifetime packages I mailed out. 3 (all 3 late, one of them extremely late 5 weeks on a 2 day air package)

UPS
Lifetime packages lost for me. 4
Lifetime late deliveries. 100%
Lifetime damaged packages. 18.
Lifetime packages sent to me. ~500-600
Lifetime packages I sent ~19 late, 1 lost. 1 damaged
On the side note my father is the rural alaskan UPS agent for my states sector. I happen to know how sloppy UPS handles it's stuff before it even arrives here. How they manage such a low figure compared to FedEx I will never understand.

USPS been in the shipping business longer than all 3 of them combined and handles countless more pieces. Considering their overall performance. They run a smooth business. Despite them losing a claimed billions per year. I highly doubt that is from what they collect on packages. Uncle sam not only over taxes it's people. It also overpays their people. Well, maybe the overpaying is good. Probably the reason why USPS is better than DHL/FedEx/UPS.

I've had my mail stolen from my mailbox by asshats, but everything I've sent out got to destination in 1 piece. In one instance I put the wrong apt. number on the mail address, I called up the post office for that zip code and had the nice lady change the apt. number. Top notch service.

USPS is absolutely horrible. I've been sending out 98k-100k postcards in a single job, and running the job a couple of times per year. The number of cards that are returned to us as undeliverable when they are correctly addressed is astounding. The number of cards mutilated by the mail handling system? Who knows - I get quite a few mangled cards sent back to me, and I shudder to think of the number of cards that are completely obliterated. And then carriers ignore the "RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED" endorsement, and forward or deliver mail to addresses other than the address printed on the face of the card, when they are supposed to return it as undeliverable.

I've had problems with Fedex, UPS, and DHL, too. None of them are perfect, and I realize that USPS handles an outrageous volume of mail, but I'd be more inclined to use a carrier pigeon than USPS.

The best thing about the USPS is that they actually know where you are if you buy a new house in a new development (and happen to be the first resident IN that development). All those other carriers have no clue where you are and it can take a long time for them to get it through their heads (and for them to get their system updated). So you play telephone tag with them for a day or two before you actually get the package. I've never had any real problems with the USPS nor any major problems with DHL, FedEx, or UPS. I prefer UPS over them all and only had one package 'lost' with them but that was during the holiday season a couple years ago. I contacted the store and they sent the order again and I received it the next day. A couple days later the original shipment showed up.
