IPSEC.

IPSEC as in built into Win 2k?

i'm not sure what you mean?

Has Windows progressed to the point that it has IPSEC? Wow. Time flies.[/quote]

win 2k server does. i believe that win 2k pro can be ipsec clients.

i could be completely off, i haven't implemented ipsec on a win2k server yet.

It was released with Win 2k, but it's been available for a long time now for all Windows platforms (save for Win95).

IPSEC is easy and cheap. Unfortunately, it isn't included in these crappy home WAPs. There are plenty of FREE IPSEC implimentations.

again, my initial analogy stands. it is better to WEP than NOTHING AT ALL.

Maybe, but why do things half assed?

i posted a scenario earlier where the ISP could come after the home owner with an unsecured network. If i have WEP enabled then they are less likely to come after me because i at least have made an attempt at security.

btw do you have a link to some of those IPSec implementations you are referring to. i'd like to try a few out.

OpenBSD has had IPSEC for quite a while now.
FreeS/WAN has been around for a while.

You are correct. Win 98+ boxen can be IPSec clients as well with a separate download. It might be as part of a Windows update these days, but I've been Win 9x sober for 400 days and counting *crosses fingers*

ok. i know about those. i'm not sure how i would implement those for a client who has a Wireless Router (netgear/linksys type) and Windows clients.

Don't know, I'm a unix geek ;)

My solutions aren't for everyone, and WEP is better than posting your username/password on a billboard, but it is still a horrible solution. The committee that came up with it should be flogged with a wet noodle.

so basically your just a punk that likes to criticize but offers no alternatives.

your a peach.

as i said It's better to set up WEP than nothing at all. i'm not sure why that is such a controversial statement. it's not like I'm the committee that came up with WEP, i just have to implement solutions for clients for whom UNIX variations ARE NOT an option.

I offered an alternative. Your environment may not be able to handle it.

Yep,

Its widely known that WEP is a very weak security protocol.

Sure, its better than nothing. Just barely though.

So wait, if I got a wireless router in place of my current one right now, then there would be no way to lock it down? Erm, sounds odd. I can limit only specific MACs, but people can find those, spoof and still get in?

Guess I will have to do some research before I buy anything.
