I have the chance to work in Shanghai for a few years and was thinking of replacing my phone. Until recently I thought of getting the Pixel but with the lack of official google presence in China figure that paying £700 for a google phone isn't the best idea.

Many chinese phone makers run android though so I was wondering if anybody had any advice about it all. Can I download apps from the playstore while behind the great firewall of china, will google now/assistant work etc etc?

There are Chinese app stores, and you should be able to download APK's of popular apps.
