Using an android phone in China

v-600

I have the chance to work in Shanghai for a few years and was thinking of replacing my phone. Until recently I thought of getting the Pixel but with the lack of official google presence in China figure that paying £700 for a google phone isn't the best idea.

Many chinese phone makers run android though so I was wondering if anybody had any advice about it all. Can I download apps from the playstore while behind the great firewall of china, will google now/assistant work etc etc?

when i was in china last year my phone worked fine on chinas cellular network - maps, the store, gmail,... all of it. i use VZW in the states and just had them turn on the china travel plan for when i was there

nothing worked on WIFI in the hotels however, all the google stuff was blocked - until i got to hong kong where it started working again

I was in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Changsha as well as HK
