Used Apple TV2 selling for more than new Apple TV3

Think those are expensive, look at the original Apple TV. It's because the first and second generation can be hacked to run XBMC and various apps which the stock Apple TV won't do. Apple TV 3 hasn't been jailbroken yet.

Sold my NIB aTv2 that I bought for $75 right after aTv3 launch for $150

how's the used market doing, cuz I got a used one I'd sell for $140 haahah

All the ones i am seeing at or above that price in L.A. are jailbroken.

Of course. If people wanted non-jailbroken Apple TV, they would just buy the Apple TV3 for $99. I was just surprised at the $150+ going rate for JB ATV2. I have 3 JB ATV2 but have no interest in selling. Non-jailbroken Apple TV is useless IMO and from what I read, ATV3 is not going to be jailbroken for a very long time if ever.

I agree, my non-jailbroken ATV2 is pretty useless for me. I haven't bothered jailbreaking it yet though.

The wife uses it occasionally to rent movies, and I don't want to mess with that.

What are "various online sources and local sources"?

Probably stuff like Amazon Instant. It's giving more functionality and making it more akin to a Roku. I personally see no need for all that. I use my AppleTV to AirPlay, watch Netflix, and rent movies.

I have an ATV2 and two Rokus. I find them to be equally useful.

So, at this point, no one has sufficiently explained to me why an un-jailbroken ATV2 is "useless".

I tried to put XBMC on my aTV2, but at the end of the day what I just do is use AirVideo on my iPad and AirPlay it over to my aTV.

Wouldn't a Boxee Box be a better choice for this?

Boxee Box also supports airplay, but not airplay mirroring. But, the Boxee Box would allow you to connect to your network shares and play them natively. It plays about 50-60Mbit/s off the network connection and will even do 100Mbit off a local storage device (USB HD or SD Card).

I use plex to pull media off of my NAS. This way all of my media across all of my devices (OS X and iOS) are all uniform.

I just sent a Roku XS back. I was very disappointed by how it felt in my hands. It was like a happy meal toy. But I got over that. The UI is very lacking and not user friendly. I much rather have to deal with jailbreaking an aTV than use that. :\ I was really hopeful that it would be my tv solution thus freeing up my Mac Mini (2011). Should have never given my aTv to my parents....

nice, gotta try this. I don't have a JB aTV2 and I basically use it for airplay and playing music on the tv.

wait - Amazon Instant support is back?

I've tried to give Plex a fair shake, honestly, but it's just one of the single most frustrating UI's I've ever used.

Just point the AirVideo Server on your computer to the folders you want to share and go from there. Works really well. I can watch stuff on the iPad in the kitchen, tap the AirPlay when I get to the living room, and then I can still surf on the iPad with AirVideo in the background, it's a great setup.

Plex on what device?

Client or server?

The server's UI is irritating but I rarely use it. At most I just right click and force update all source files.

Plex on the Roku sucked. It's better on the aTv but at this point I have a Mac Mini for my HTPC running Plex and some fancy skin (don't remember off the top of my head)

money thanks. I've been doing it the assbackward way and loading up iTunes when I need to watch a movie.

iPhone/iPad/Touchpad (Android). The server component is super annoying, but I'm not a fan of the way things are presented on the client end either.

More importantly, I can't just browse files. Unless the files are identified and labeled by the plex back-end, they don't show up. I downloaded some professional sports program that shall remain nameless and dumped it in to my TV folder so I could watch it on my iPhone. I couldn't becauase it's not "recognized" and even though it's in a folder inside the TV folder, Plex is just like 'Oh, yeah, that's just garbage, no need to worry about that.'

With AirVideo I can at least browse files and it will list anything. Plex is probably better for someone who's trying to make a HTPC, but I still think Boxee Box has the advantage there unless you just simply also have to have a computer hooked up for some reason.

If plex doesn't recognize the video it just puts it up with the file name in the folder you specify. It does show it.
