At any rate, my suggestion was a budget receiver (with 5.1 analog input to hook up his X-Fi) and then get a few input switches to take care of his unique needs... and if he wants to, he could hook his old receiver (that has some issues for the audio portion I think) and use that as a switch for some of the inputs. (I think the receiver might be ok except for an amp problem?)

That sounds pretty reasonable to me... and more likely than him implementing his own solution :p

Seriously, wtf...how on earth do you need that many inputs.

Some people have a lot of stuff. ;)

Okay, well studio sh*t, I understand. :p

How do people NOT need that many inputs? Uhhh...I have a computer, sacd/dvd-a player, cd player, DVD player and a Wii. What other like 10 components do you have?

not to mention the XBOX and the PS2 AND Cable box, VCR, etc.. So yeah, it's pretty easy to rack up the number of connections especially on component.

I have components in storage because I don't want to spend the amount of scratch for an A/V receiver with enough inputs.

4 VCR's
NTSC DVD player (full featured)
PAL DVD player
laserdisc
cd changer
tv audio input

That's not a pre-amp, you retard.

Here's kind of how it went down:

goku makes thread about his X-Fi being good (when he got it on an impulse buy without knowing what it was)
I ask about what he's hooking it up to
goku tells me about his receiver and how he wants a new one
I try to get some info on what the requirements are
goku mentions the number of inputs he needs
I suggest getting an input switch for additional connectivity and using a budget receiver
I then mention how it would take a flagship receiver like the Denon 5805 to have that many component inputs
goku asks for a summary of what you can get for receivers in the $100-$10,000 range
I give some basic ideas and mention how even below the 5805 pricepoint you could be getting separates
I mention how it's rediculous to do something like that though based on using some POS Polk 5.1 speakers that were $300 for the set
goku wants to know about preamps and amps and Denon 5805 alternatives including older denon flagship models
I say it's a bad idea to do something like that for his purposes
Now goku wants to know if he can use his comptuer as a preamp (I don't even know if he knows he needs an amp in addition to a pre-amp now, and I have no clue why he's asking this knowing his goal is to have 6 component inputs in addition to other inputs)

I've tried giving goku some guidelines on what he should really be considering and pointed him at some other resources (like AVSforum) to get an idea of what's going on.

I'm fairly confused about the whole situation and the thought process that's going on.

what is it?

preamp can have some different connotations.

In the sense that you're thinking about it, you're way into the HT interpretation of the term meaning basically a big input switch with some different features like decoding and such.

uhhh... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preamp

EDIT: You're not wrong to call what you want a preamp.

Just be aware that if you do get one, you're going to need to get an amp as well.

I would just emphasize that if you go this route, please make it worth it and get new speakers + sub to go with it to enjoy all the benefits you can get from your purchase.

Goku... I'm confused, you're making this harder than it needs to be. Find an entry level receiver, which should only cost you $300 or whatever, use that and move on...

I'm going to stop PM-ing back about the questions you're asking so you can get other opinions on what I'm saying to you.

In reply to your thoughts about the component switch:

You can get component switchers that have audio with them too.

Often the nicer ones will have remotes too.

If you have a decent remote, you can program them to control the switch too if it has a remote.

They also make digital audio switchers that auto-sense which input is active and switch to it automatically.

You could buy a midrange receiver and buy some switches for a couple hundred dollars and come out thousands less than a receiver or separates with all the connections you want.

YAGT - yet another goku thread.

Goku - post your requrements, listen to the knowledgable folks and then decide on a course of action. You are putting the cart about 3 miles before the horse.

Easly solution, just turn the horse and cart around, attach a rope to the cart from the horse and now they're connected.

a preamp cannot do all the stuff like the video switching. Thats what a Processor is for. You'd be looking for a Preamp/Processor for your switching, and then amps for the power to your speakers.

The soundcard can act as one of the sources, but not the pre/pro because it doesnt have much video switching capability.

Get something like the Panasonic SA-XR55s from Amazon.com and one of those 8 port video game console selectors. Done deal for 250$ plus you have the power. The whole package would be at the level of your speakers rather than breaking the bank to get the Denon Flagship and wasting it on entry level speakers.

Make sure you use Monster cable for that horse.
