USB HDD Error

So my crappy 120GB Maxtor USB HDD has started to die. I think it's just corrupt sectors on the drive, but since I don't have anywhere to back the data on it up, I can just format to check. I'm getting a lot of corrupt files from I/O device errors.
So my question...is it the drive itself, as it is a Maxtor and I've had nothing but problems...or is it the USB enclosure that's causing the issues?
And if it is the enclosure, since it is actually a one-piece external...can I still tear the enclosure apart to connect the drive via USB?

Most USB externals are IDE drives in an enclosure. You can always connect the drive directly to the IDE bus on the computer to see if it's the USB enclosure causing problems.

Some older mobos - especially USB 1.1 mobos - can cause data corruption. They just weren't designed with the idea that the USB bus would be used with a hard drive.

I've also seen data corruption on USB drives connected to a USB hub. USB drives should always be connected directly to a computer's USB port.

Also keep in mind that all USB ports work in pairs. A misbehaved device on the second port can cause data loss. I've seen situations where a card reader on one port would cause a USB HDD to act up on it's sister port.

As the other poster mentioned, download the Maxtor HDD diagnostic and run the FULL (Advanced) diagnostic. This will tell you if the drive passes factory certification.

Hope this helps...

Download Powermax from Maxtor and do the complete drive verification test.

Needs a damned 1.44MB floppy. I don't even have one of those laying around anymore...and I'm not very skilled at bootable CDs yet. Any other way to run it...or do I have to go and buy a drive?
