Pros for england life:
Its old, you can see a lot of neat old stuff there.
Some say not to touch the food, I say, They have a fairly good variety of food at every supermarket, you just have to know where to look.
It is green, year round. In the winter, it is like "Oh, this is pretty green" in the summer it is like "GAH green overload!"

Cons:
Social life is basically going to a pub and getting drunk, they really don't have a lot to do outside of that (ok, there are museums and stuff, but really, not a whole lot).

You'll never see open land, real open land.

Housing is EXPENSIVE. Forget having a yard, you'll be lucky to have a hole in the wall for the same price we spend on a 2 story front home with a front and back yard.

Very much a nanny state, people are pushing them to do everything for them.

Government resorts to an unsettling amount of fear tactics, IE cameras at every corner, signs saying things like "We have people everywhere you no good dirty scoundrel, if you step out of line we WILL see it."

TV tax, you spend more then we do on cable TV for 4 channels of crappy programming. They assume you have a tv (Even if you don't) and will send threatening letters to you if you if you don't pay for the TV tax. If you want semi-ok tv you have to go with sky network, and no, that doesn't include tv tax.

Huge slums in every city. (they are called council houses), very, VERY ignorant people live there, they make our rednecks seem semi intelligent.

It makes more sense not to work then it does to work there. Living off the dole is very common.

NHS sucks, really bad.

Gas is REALLY expensive, not only that, but to own a car means you'll be taxed 100 different ways.

Did I mention the VAT, yeah, it sucks, at every level all goods are taxed, and pretty heavily.

To visit is ok, but I would never want to live there.

Because Ireland told GB to fuck off and the two of them had some words about it... some of them not to long ago. They are two separate countries and governments.

Just got done with my wiki-assisted procrastination.

So Ireland is an island, nothing more. Republic of Ireland is the territory of those spunky stubborn drunks that told GB to piss off, and Northern Ireland are the bastards who stole the name.
Ha, got it. :D

Or are all the hilarious drunks in N.I.? :hmm:
I  whichever Irish fit that description. If it's both, then by default I go with the Republic. That whole monarch thing is a royal mess. :p

So... the "countries" that make up G.B., and the U.K. in general, are simply territories, yes? They aren't sovereign, so calling them a country is a joke. Why don't they just move on and accept those areas as provinces? They can still keep all their lovely cultures, traditions, and more importantly, local governing bodies. It'd be a more realistic political name structure since well, that's all they appear to be.
And GO SCOTLAND, tell them Brits to ah heck off already and go independent. Monarchs are retarded, old, and wrinkly. Sure aren't standing there looking pretty. ;)

And wait wait waitaminute... I've always known Canada was "under the monarch", but they too aren't even sovereign? I laugh at the Canucks but them and their two tanks and two boats most certainly deserve sovereignty.

Hey Canucks:
Are there any independence movements going on up there in Canadia?
:D

What is the point of keeping that old and tired governing body alive still... just for the old image? What exactly is the queen actually *capable* of doing?

This thread is now about Canada and their departure from that convoluted royal mess. ;)

England, Scotland and Wales make up Great Britain.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland make up the United Kingdom.

There, now you are informed.

And WTF, AIDS? What exactly do you think is hugely different about AIDS there versus here?

FWIR, Brit chicks are like american dudes, they binge drink and one night stands are way less taboo for women than they are here. Maxim had some stats comparing sex/drinking of all the countries a while back, but I'm too lazy to look it up, but basically, brit women were the biggest hoes

If you don't know the reasons then why are you so certain American is better?

Because he's not trying to convince himself, he's trying to convince his sister and I'm willing to be she wants more than his word. Especially if she's older (speaking from experience here).

I wonder how much she actually knows about Britain.

England used to be and could have been still a great country, but it's turned into a socialist paradise/nanny state. Cameras everywhere, high taxes.

But it's rich in culture and a lot of things to do. But I wouldn't live there.

There's plenty of scourge in both places to not give a sh!t. Just fvcking wish her well and quit being a condescending american (redundant?) Everyone needs experiences of living abroad imo, and good for her for being willing to give it a shot.

Agree, except it's not condescension if we really are better than everyone else. :D

I lived in the UK for 3 years before moving back to South Africa, my home.

Tell her she can move there if she likes:

weather that is constantly grey and raining
about 3 good summer days a year
cramped and overcrowded public transport
cramped and expensive living conditions - you pay a lot of money for something the size of a matchbox, and your neighbours live on top of you.

The Republic of Ireland doesnt like England because they fucked them over, and rightly so. I'd be pissed if I was Ireland too.

How is she planning on moving here?

My wife is an American and I am Scottish, so far we have paid over £3000 in visa fees for her to obtain her permanent right to remain. It is a very difficult and expensive process for anyone who is not an EU citizen to move here.

I was able to get my US green card a hell of a lot easier than she was able to get her visa.

But, as a whole my wife prefers the UK to the US. There are a lot of things that she misses, such as decent American or Mexican food. However, in London that is not a problem to find.

She has had no problems with the NHS, but we have private insurance on top of that through my work, so all we deal with is our GP.

But I think the first step, your sister needs to figure out is how she plans to move here. The UK Government has just clamped down on student visas, so they are much harder to obtain. A Highly Skilled Migrant Visa (HSMP) is a possibility if she qualifies and makes $60,000+ a year in the US. The last option is to get engaged and married over here. Although its actually easier if she gets engaged outside the UK and applies for a fiancée visa, then gets married inside the UK.

The UK is basically the European version of the US. Similar weight problems, crime rates and teen pregnancies.

And the weather sucks :p

Moving us away from England was, I think, one of the better things they did. I am still a citizen but have no inclination to live there at all. Used to visit a lot, last time five years ago. Everyone has their own reasons, though. I think its weather is bad, housing is expensive, and yes the government is more of a nanny state than in the uS. As a launch pad for vacations (to Europe) it's obviously very nice, though. England has a higher rate of alcohol consumption--quite a bit higher--it's just not a place I'd want to raise kids these days.
