I hear Winston Churchill is famous for his lack of willpower and inability to rise above his animalistic nature.
Um, I eat like an Ethiopian with an unlimited giftcard McDonald's (not that I eat there except for yummy sausage breakfast burritos), and I'm MAYBE 5lbs overweight (probably from my age at this point).
The problem ISN'T that bad stuff is out there, the problem is mommy couldn't tell them NO and to GTFO and play outside. The problem ISN'T that they have access to things that could make them gain weight. The problem is THEM and crappy parenting. This is what we get when we aren't allowed to tell kids NO and let everyone always win every single time.
A culture of fatties who think they are better than sliced (and heavily buttered) bread.
Being overly-emotional (making personal attacks when faced with opinions you don't like) is another sign of lack of self-control.
what do you think will happen first -- physical requirements are lowered so that more fattiest can serve to fill enlistment quotas, or physically fit gays are allowed to serve openly?
it's like natural for an animal to gorge itself.
modern society has combined two major things that are proving to be deadly -- dramatically increased availability to simple carbohydrates that are both inexpensive and easy to eat, and sedentary lifestyles.
most of our grandparents didn't spend 45 hours a week sitting in one place in the office followed by going home and sitting in one place on the couch or at the computer for another 3-4 hours/day.
what I'd be really curious to look at would be the modern countries where obesity doesn't seem to be as much of an issue (compare France against it's fatty neighbors in England and Germany... is it just a matter of French culture valuing physical appearance more?)
Put amphetamine in the water. Problem solved.
next month we'll talk about trying to solve the insomnia epidemic.
Many of the Wehrmacht's soldiers were high on Pervitin when they went into battle, especially against Poland and France -- in a Blitzkrieg fueled by speed. The German military was supplied with millions of methamphetamine tablets during the first half of 1940. The drugs were part of a plan to help pilots, sailors and infantry troops become capable of superhuman performance. The military leadership liberally dispensed such stimulants, but also alcohol and opiates, as long as it believed drugging and intoxicating troops could help it achieve victory over the Allies. But the Nazis were less than diligent in monitoring side-effects like drug addiction and a decline in moral standards.
After it was first introduced into the market in 1938, Pervitin, a methamphetamine drug newly developed by the Berlin-based Temmler pharmaceutical company, quickly became a top seller among the German civilian population. According to a report in the Klinische Wochenschrift ("Clinical Weekly"), the supposed wonder drug was brought to the attention of Otto Ranke, a military doctor and director of the Institute for General and Defense Physiology at Berlin's Academy of Military Medicine. The effects of amphetamines are similar to those of the adrenaline produced by the body, triggering a heightened state of alert. In most people, the substance increases self-confidence, concentration and the willingness to take risks, while at the same time reducing sensitivity to pain, hunger and thirst, as well as reducing the need for sleep. In September 1939, Ranke tested the drug on 90 university students, and concluded that Pervitin could help the Wehrmacht win the war. At first Pervitin was tested on military drivers who participated in the invasion of Poland. Then, according to criminologist Wolf Kemper, it was "unscrupulously distributed to troops
Anyone who knows the shit that's served in school lunch rooms in this country knows a big part of why this is. Another part is many people don't know how to eat a healthy diet in this country even if they tried. People eat themselves sick in this country largely by a well maintained ignorance about what they're actually eating.
Worth a watch:

Indeed, but the US is not alone. All western countries suffer from people who try to alienate the use of simple things as rice, herbs, eggs, spices and vegetables. Cooking food is actually a lot of fun. But it also takes time. And time is often short for working people. But then again you can cook healthy food and have enough for 2 days a row.

I live in the south, and it seems like most everyone goes out to eat or gets prepackaged meals rather than cook.
It's interesting you mention cooking. Time is so short for some people that they do not know how to cook even basic dishes. I've seen people who do not know how to properly hold a knife.
It's like watching the mentally handicapped performing a moderately complex task.
A friend of mine is married to a hispanic. She uses recipes handed down for generations. She and her female friends/relatives have one great lament, and that is the younger generation refuses to continue cooking. A whole part of their culture gone in a generation.
I was born in the South and went back there every summer when I was a kid. Anyone who ate out was irresponsible, and anyone who made TV dinners for their family was a bad parent.
Now I have inlaws in the Dallas area, and their kitchen never gets dirty. They eat almost every meal out.
I guess times have changed.
Why should we blame only our fat peddling restaurants? Many US home cooked meals were even more un heart healthy? Meat and potatoes and plenty of it has always been a staple US diet.
It isn't just one thing. it is a bunch of different things contributing to this problem. EAting bad in general obviously encompasses more than just eating at restaurants.
if you were truly interested in saving money, you'd want them to be fat.Since I now have a vested interest in everyone's healthcare, I think we should start taxing people who are fat. Require a checkup every year, calculate, add taxes. Same for smoking, drinking, driving fast, work in high stress environment, drugs, etc. If you do all of the bad things, you should have to pay for it. Force people to be who we want them to be.
What if the all the mad war mongering generals called for a war and no one bothered to show up? Would gasp, the mad war mongering generals actually have to fight it out with their opposite mad war mongering generals, kinda tends to take the fun of it, if they can't send someone else to die for their own delusions and they actually have to risk their silly ass lives for a damn change.

skinny, healthy people ultimately drain the most money from the system because they live the longest and health care is most expensive at the end of your life.
