Perhaps you need to watch some of Saddam's speeches, for he very much considered himself to be the leader of the faith as well. Iraq was secular only in as far as whoever ruled it made damned sure no cleric could attain enough power to be a threat to himself.

I've also watched the speeches of his theocratic counterparts, which I would suggest for a comparison of Baathist vs. just about everything else in the region.

An awful lot of Baathists ended up with Daesh after the US did it's de-Baathification of Iraq. So, in a way, his statement is probably correct as at least some of Saddam's old ruling gang are now doing the same duties as part of Daesh.

That's incidental to what he replied to: "Lol. Where was ISIS when Saddam was in charge?" Ie. ISIS the org.

There was no crazy theocracy when Saddam was in charge. It just so happened that IS came along paying for military experience and former army guys signed up.

You should broaden your horizons a bit.

General Wesley Clark - Supreme Allied Commander, Europe/Commander in Chief, U.S. European Command, 1997–2000. He was the 161st 4-star general in US history.

In this video at about 1:40 he will tell you why.

It goes something like this :

His theory overreaches but otherwise in-line with Clark's message. The ME is within scope of american imperial hegemony.

Al-Qaida in Iraq were virtually non-existent until when???

Until its members were born.

Let me see if I understand you. Bush created ISIS by invading Iraq and inflaming Muslim terrorism.

Fine. Can we then blame Obama for creating ISIS by pulling out of Iraq, without which ISIS could not have arisen?

It's such a dumb argument. Maybe the US is to blame for North Korea too. If you're relying on indirect responsibility you can blame anyone for anything.

Bloodthirsty Muslim zealots created ISIS.
