I couldn't care less that Syria is allied with Iran as for policy on this issue.
The reason to do something or not is because of the issues in Syria.
The thing is, it's not as easy as 'give the protestors weapons'. As diplomats said, would that simply get a lot more people killed for no good reason?
As estimated 3,000 people have been killed by the government in this uprising, keeping it down forcefully.
3,000 terrible killings to repress the people, prevent them from having power, of men, women, and children.
But how many would be killed in a civil war?
That's not a reason not to have a civil war - sometimes oppression has the only options of civil war or oppression and Syria could still have a civil war - but if giving them some weapons would not help them win but just get a lot of them killed, why is that a good idea other than making our side feel like we helped?
I'd like to see the Syrian regime opposed for oppressive rule and murdering its own people, but it needs a sensible approach.
Republicans need things to attack Obama about. We got a taste of them when they told Obama to attack Libya, then attacked him for attacking Libya.
Republicans are not the people to listen to for good policy. Incompetent, corrupt political whores.
Syria is a taste of the limits of 'Arab Spring', which pretty much require the military not to put down the civilian uprising. Syria is putting it down so far.
If the military turns on the ruler, that would change, but will they?
Of course Iran's agenda here is very corrupt, backing Syria because it's their ally.
