US Patriot Act

Dari

Lifer
I read Robert Fisk every once in a while. Good columnist. I came upon this tidbit about the US Patriot act:

Indeed, many Americans don't even know what the chilling acronym of the "US Patriot Act" even stands for. "Patriot" is not a reference to patriotism. The name stands for the "United and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act". America's $200m (£125m) "Total Awareness Programme" will permit the US government to monitor citizens' e-mail and internet activity and collect data on the movement of all Americans. And although we have not been told about this by our journalists, the US administration is now pestering European governments for the contents of their own citizens' data files. The most recent ? and most preposterous ? of these claims came in a US demand for access to the computer records of the French national airline, Air France, so that it could "profile" thousands of its passengers. All this is beyond the wildest dreams of Saddam and the Dear Leader Kim.

Can anyone confirm this?

I believe it is indeed true, as I have heard this from several friends who usually are right.... however, I can provide several links.

This country is turning more into Iraq everyday. But of course you're just too blind to recognize it.

dont' see a problem with monitoring emails.Just encypte them, not even nasa will be abel to break them if u use strong enough encryption.

While blind faith towards any institution is dangerous, this bill came just after 9/11. I hope we can amend it in the future.

Uh, last time I checked, NASA wasn't into the cryptography business.

And as for encrypting your email... don't you think the NSA has deals with software vendors in order to get their keys? They listen to phone conversations in China and monitor unnumbered foreign bank accounts. Encrypting your email through Outlook isn't going to deter them.

You don't have to use Outlook. And I am sure there are strong enough encryption algorithms out there. Its just a hassle.

I'm not sure who to blame for this orwellian act: the terrorists or those that've been waiting for a catastrophic event like this to impose it upon us. Either way, it's setting a dangerous precedent and I don't like it. We can either succumb to the will of our government, or resist and be labelled 'suspicious.' I wonder if there is a third way.

WHoa there. NOt really at all. As a citizen I gladly accept some limits on my freedom to increase security, but in NO WAY is this country turning into Iraq: We don't have a dictator that slaughters thousands of people, we don't have an authoritarian state that forces its beliefs on us.

If you really believe this country is like Iraq, move there and shut up.

I like to see how government is going to keep tabs on 287,000,000 + people in the USA.

Hell, they can't even keep tabs on their own administrations/agencies.

Which is why know one should really have a problem unless they've done something to alert these agencies. They need something to go by and I'm assuming they aren't just picking random people and monitoring their e-mail.

Yeah, but once they put their lenses on you, it'll probably be a looooooong time before they take it off. If I was arab, muslim, or someone not fitting the scope of a 'good american,' I'd have a lot to be worry about. These people may become a fifth column in this country, like blacks were (or are) seen as.

Some limits? Your email doesn't need to be private? How about your phone calls?

Maybe we should just put a couple cameras in your house.

Yup, if a person is involved with criminal act or terrorism, then they should be worried.

I'm not worried about it. But I'm sure there will be lot of peeps who will cry because they

feel government is infringing on their rights.

In order to monitor E-mails of USA's population, government have to increase their

agency (whomever that may be) by ???....Whatever the size of increase is, it will have

to be very big.

ever heard of Echolon? They have been doing this for years spying on emails telephones Companies. It is also believed that Echolon serves industrial espionage. They just didnt do it on US citizen. Anyway, If I was in the German government I would immediately cut this base off the electricity or throw them out altogether.

Doesn't matter whether or not you're involved in something illegal, you should still have the right to privacy in your personal communications.
