I am a New Yorker through and through and have visited many other countries and always thought "Why the hell would Europeans visit NY". Dont get me wrong, I love NY but if I lived in a nice European country I would never consider going to NY or the USA for vaca. I would go tt Australia or New Zealand.

hostile...? I'd say the Middle East. You drive down the U.S. highway, you don't worry about roadside bombs compared to the streets of Baghdad.

outside of iraq, a tourist will encounter less crime and generally be safer in any destination in the middle east than in the US.

truth

proof? lets say i take a stroll in the bekkaa valley, i don't think i would be too welcome there.

Personally, if I was in Iraq, I'd worry much more about being shot by Americans than Iraqis. They shoot a lot of British military, and even British civilian TV crews.

And they shoot a lot of Canadians too. :(

So, if they don't like it, go home. weeds out the idiots anyway. If you want in bad enough you'll deal with it, those are the type people I'd rather have. Not just any moron who can walk.

Have you seen the US test scores compared to other developed countries'? People coming on vacations here are smarter than the average American.

And that's why the US has 20 of the top 25 Universities in the world.

Source?
And according to whom?

This list shows 18. I had looked at some older data before

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14321230/site/newsweek/

So does the number of top universities indicate...
a)intelligence of the country's population? or
b)the wealth of the country
especially considering that part of the criteria for 'top' university includes both international faculty and international students.

Please. This side debate is irrelevant to this thread. Education levels have nothing to do with being rude and hostile.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that surveying slightly over 2000 people does not a fact make? Besides the fact that those surveyed were talking about Visas and immigration officials and not customs officials. If they want to talk about difficult to immigrant to - look at Mexico's restrictions.

Also, it is not disclosed what 16 countries these people are coming from

The article shows nothing regarding the reasons behind the drop in tourism

Grade: C-

Americans are hostile, paranoid, and not very hospitable. No getting around it.
Also, what is here to see? Aside from San Francisco and Las Vegas, most other cities are either urban jungle, vanilla or stuff you can get elsewhere. People want to see something unique, different culture when they travel.

Customs officials were never the focal point of the article, so I'm not sure why you are bringing them up. They simply prevent bad articles from coming in, stop smuggling, and tax dutied good.

The problem is with the attitude and nature of the immigration officials, and the difficulty in obtaining a visa post 9/11.

The point was more that the title says "U.S. is most unfriendly country to visitors" yet does nothing to show that we are unfriendly to tourists. The only support the article has for its argument of 'unfriendly-ness' is that visitors think the people they attain a visa or immigration papers from are rude. If you are a tourist you generally do not have to deal with these people, only customs agents. Lacking any other written argument to show that these tourists are dealing with 'unfriendly' people, a large part of the argument is lost.

I'm not really surprised by this survey, and moreover I don't really give a sh!t. 9/11 changed everything in this regard, and rightfully so.

So it's difficult to obtain a visa and the officials are rude. Gosh I can't imagine why that is. Maybe it's because a small but very vocal percentage of radical muslims would like to see everyone in our country in a pine box.

I guess they are a bit paranoid.

buzz. you must really be confident in your belief to typecast 280+ million people. besides, urban jungles are an attraction per se. thats why many are drawn to new york. if i was european, id visit the states all the time. lots of food big shopping and cheap everything

does the US or Europe have a bigger problem with tourists getting pickpocketed or having personal belongings stolen?

The last two trips thats my wife's relatives have been on in Paris and Rome have involved getting pickpocketed and then having a camera bag stolen...apparently these two cities have alot of incidents of these occurring, but not sure how those stats stack up against tourists visiting the US...

even people who come on suspicious holidays here get let in.... "we is here for 2 week holiday" "have a nice time" *stamps passport* 2 weeks later they're never seen again and are selling crack to 14 year old girls wanting to be like kate moss.

I'm off to England in the morning.

Great place to visit.

As someone who has never had to apply for a visa to enter the US or deal with immigration officers, I guess I'll have to believe them.

I agree BUT U.S. customs agents are very rude (at least the ones in LAX).

I'd rather be a dumb wealthy capitalist American than an "intelligent" poor socialist European.

Education does not equal intelligence. Most people (in countries where schooling is pushed hard and teachers are respected) are over-educated.

Teachers are respected = over-educated. what?
