HR Block online, because my shit is straightforward. One house, no business, no outside investments/gains other than 401k (for now..).

Anything beyond that for my situation is excessive and a waste of time.

When I saw that two people voted for 'by hand', I knew the other was going to be you. I've used TurboTax in the past, but it's starting to piss me off. I probably spend as much time trying to figure out why their bullshit doesn't work as I would doing it by hand, so I'm going to try that this year. I have a pretty complicated return, so I'm not sure how well this will go.

Unless you have a hole in your head, give HR Block a try. Took 20 minutes to get everything imported/filled out for me and my wife.

Already received my tax return back yesterday (or maybe Monday). It's like the government is getting more efficient, which is crazy.

I did taxes for them one year when I was between jobs. Their business model is to move as many clients through there as possible to maximize fees charged. Many of the people working there were not very knowledgeable and just knew the basics. There were some decent more experienced preparers though; they just did it for the extra income. Nobody works there for a career.

I wouldn't go there personally because I probably know more about tax prep than half the people working there and I could actually do my own taxes.

Still waiting for the last 1099. Besides, I owe $400 this year so I will wait until April to file.

I'm also waiting for my 1099 (from Vanguard), but considering I was a victim of the Equifax breach I'm tempted to just go through my statements from the past year and figure it out myself. I guess an extra week of waiting won't hurt.

I've almost started thinking about my taxes. I expect it'll be a couple months yet before I get to them. It'll probably be the same as every other year. I'll owe the state a little, and get a little back from the feds, just about zeroing out. I keep thinking about adjusting withholding so I owe the feds, but I don't like screwing with a working system, so I never get to it.

If you find a tax pro who is a Star Wars fan you could get them done by Han.

I use their online tool, for free. This works for me since my financial situation is not complicated.

I've never had anyone prepare my taxes before, so I can't speak to the quality of their folks.

Have you gathered your ink well/quill and carrier dove to prepare your taxes? ;)

I've used TaxAct.com for years and it works great. Super easy and fast. Granted, I'm filing single with no weird investments or a ton of deductions, but even if I had that sorta thing it wouldn't be too bad because it basically guides you through each sort of thing and explains everything.

Express1040.com Been using it for 6-7 years now and have had a flawless experience every time (very simple: MFJ, standard deduction, single W-2, CTCs, couple 1099-INTs).

Side question, I filed on 01/27, then just got another 1099-INT in the mail for $21 of additional income that didn't end up getting reported. My top bracket is 15%, so this amounts to $3 in additional tax owed. Is the gov't really going to come after me if I don't do an amendment? My understanding is, I can't even do the amendment until after mid-February, after I receive my refund.

I'm thinking of a raven GoT style, but I probably won't get it sufficiently trained in time. Pigeons are cheap, reliable, and taste good.

Wait and see what your refund looks like. They may come back and say "we corrected your return" and take the money out for you.

You missed the part where I said my return is complicated. There is absolutely no way it will take 20 minutes. I know TurboTax like the back of my hand and it takes days. I tried HR Block last year and their software is just as stupid. I also tried using an actual person at HR Block, but I pulled the plug after I had to correct her work for the 10th time. The only way through this mess is to do it myself on a piece of paper. It's simply way too complicated because they present an opaque abstraction layer between you and the form. If your stuff isn't complex, the software is probably good enough and saves some time.

Got an email at work that they will no longer send our T4 in the mail but we have to print it... and it's only going to be available in like end of February. WHY?!?!? If they're not going to mail them out fine, but why not just make it available to print now? It makes no sense. It's all automated anyway, or at least it should be. IMO it should be available January 1st. I don't know what's the point of delaying it.

It's the only thing I need so I can get my taxes done. Kind of looking forward to the money. I kinda went over budget on my mining rig. :p

I filed my federal taxes last night. Going to file my state tonight through the state's e-file site. Take that, Equifax hackers.
