I take the standard deduction so I could literally pencil in my return.... but I use TurboTax for the hell of it....

Of course that doesn't mean I paid for it...

Next year a lot of you folks that hire cpas should really consider doing it yourself since the standard deduction is being doubled and the house deductions are getting cut off at 10k. I suspect at least 50% of you guys won't be itemizing next year...

this. No interest deductions. I did dump a large amount extra on the charitable 12/2017 for the deduction that I would not get if I donated in 2018.

We have 6 rental properties, all with depreciation and their own expenses, and my wife is self-employed. I will use a CPA, and a really good one at that, for the rest of my life. The guy we use has a degree from UC Santa Barbara and he has over 25 years of experience.

FTR-I am an accountant and I prepared our taxes every year until a couple years ago. I’ll never do them again if I can help it.

Which is why I said 50%. Situations like that is definitely where i would bring in a CPA as well. It's the people that itemized for years off mortgage interest and property taxes that are highly unlikely to be itemizing... and good riddance, I hated that shit that incentivized HCOL areas

By the way, when you did do your own taxes what parts were the biggest pains in the ass?

The expenses mainly and the splits on investment properties we co-own with other partners. It is just tedious and time consuming and I dreaded doing it every year.

I will gladly pay our CPA to not have to deal with this every year. Plus, if we ever get audited we have him to represent us when dealing with the IRS.

The most closest to free website I can find and manage to get through without them bait and switching me. I pretty much have to find a different one every year.

No matter what I do I never come out ahead; I always owe money. So there's no way I'm paying more than I absolutely have to for someone to tell me that.

Apparently I do need a CPA to file my taxes. My free fillable forms got rejected twice because of an error in the address field. My address is kind of weird and the W2 from my employer has it wrong so the first time I used the correct address and the second I used the address my employer uses. Both got rejected. That's when I figured out that I had left my name off the form. :D

Use to be able to file an EZ form over the phone, I did that a couple times years ago.

And there were plans to have the gov host sites to pay your taxes online with them. They built the computers facilities but it was canceled and left abandoned for years.

Free fillable forms is the closest thing to an IRS site. It is run by an IRS contractor and there's no marketing bullshit. The tax prep industry keeps Congress well greased so I don't expect any thing better until the revolution.

I have to at least use some software anymore because my robot investor performs too many trades to enter by hand.

Switched last year from Turbotax because TT started to nickel and dime. They're prices have been going up over the years.

The only thing slightly complicated on my tax return is calculating the depletion on my natural gas wells.
