It all depends on what the strike is intended to do. If we're looking to attack nuke facilities they will likely require the GBU-57 penetrator and only the Air Force can deliver such a massive weapon. They come in at about 15 tons each.

In case of a real attack to reduce NK's capability there would likely be a coordination between the Navy and Air Force. This is not an either/or situation.
Yes, bunker busters can completely destroy North Korea's nuclear capability but strategically placed missiles can severely disrupt the capabilities.

Tomahawks can do a lot of damage. Again it all depends on details of a mission we don't even knows exists.

Don't think this is just a show of force.

North Korea is crazy enough to go "all in" if pricked, and there's no way to secure Seoul from retaliation at this point in time.

The only way to address them with today's tech is for us to also go "all in" and carpet bomb their entire military infrastructure. Talking a full blown war with all our assets flying off the shelf and onto the field... in a coordinated strike. Best case scenario is if we blitz them to annihilate them. Anything less invites greater retaliation.

But I do not think we can sneak a strike force large enough quick enough, or secretly enough to avoid North Korea striking first.

Given the likelihood and necessity of an "all in" approach and its consequences, I must oppose our intervention at this time. South Korea would be devastated in hours and there's little we can do to prevent that from happening. I lack faith in our political and military leaders to choose a course of action that can minimize those losses.

A crazy and nuclear North Korea is unacceptable, but we have developed technology that, deployed in 20 years time frame, could eliminate any act of retaliation they can muster. Given the safety of such effort later, the best course of action is to wait until we're ready to strike. We must avoid a Korean war until we can secure our forces and our allies.

The Vinson was in SK last month. This isn't exactly unusual.

Correct, my daughter is on the Reagan and was in Busan last Nov for normal patrols. the ship is to have its next cruise in a few weeks and most likely will stop in Busan again.

Trump likes military parades. He couldn't get one on land, so he is going to be parading the Navy at sea.

If anyone is able to take out NK effectively and efficiently, it's China.

no one cares about North Koreans.

but seriously, everyone is quite aware of the potential death toll in both Korea's if war breaks out.

A South Korean paper is alleging that 2 more carriers will be sent to the Sea of Japan along with the Carl Vinson. I wonder if theres something behind that or if its just fud.

Adding to alien42s post.

Trump lies once again. What a bunch of buffoons.

"Remember that U.S. aircraft carrier that was headed to the Korean Peninsula as both the Trump administration and North Korea began to talk tough with one another? It turns out it wasn't — at least, not when we were led to think it was.

The Trump administration is again facing questions about why it appeared to mislead — or, at the very least, failed to correct the record about pervasive reports — that the USS Carl Vinson was headed to North Korea starting 10 days ago. Newly discovered photos show that it was actually traveling in the other direction — into the Indian Ocean — as recently as four days ago."

http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/18/politics/carl-vinson-korea-trump/index.html

Good gawd the complete incompetence of this admin is mind blowing

Official: White House, Pentagon miscommunicated on aircraft carrier's location

"We are sending an armada. Very powerful. We have submarines, very powerful, far more powerful than the aircraft carrier, that I can tell you," Trump said in an interview with Fox Business Network.

And the announcement that the Vinson had been dispatched to the region increased tensions with Pyongyang, with its official Korean Central News Agency calling the carrier's deployment "nothing but a reckless action of aggression to aggravate the tensions in the region."
But soon after the Pacific Command statement, US military officials clarified to CNN that the strike group would first complete a previously scheduled military exercise with the Australian navy.

heeeeheeeee ... Dam Son thats .. incompetent.

“Of course the people don’t want war. But after all, it’s the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it’s always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it’s a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger.”

— Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials
