It's about time. Take a look at some statistics if you disagree with me.
What? 100 deaths in the last few years? I think running with scissors is statistically more deadly.

how bout aspirin, we can ban that as well, some people are allergic to penicillin, let's ban bread as well so noone can make it on the side

Yeah, and you can always go the Tobacco/Alcohol/Marijuana route as well...

Government gets way too much money from tobacco and alcohol tax for them to ban it.

The concept of banning somebody to ingest whatever they wish into their bodies is the most ridiculous war on personal freedoms ever.

For once, and probably only this one time, I agree with Corporate.

the same logic applies to other harmful drug too then, the reason they are banning is coz of the side effects (as drastic as death in some case ) which the makers or the pill never warn you of

Who cares, you should be able to kill yourself on any drug you wish if you want the most blunt reply. The fact that a lawmaking body can make it illegal for you to do something in 'the freest country in the world' is a mockery of itself.

And since when did everything require a fvcking warning label on it. I say if you don't know what it is, don't mess with it in the first place. I am so tired of reading stupid ass labels that warn people. If you are stupid enough to do half the stuff they warn against, you deserve to die. Population control.

So, why not force a warning on the package (e.g. cigarettes) instead of banning?

It's all because of all these high-profile athletes that have kicked it. If it was the same number of unknown masses this would never be an issue.

I thought it was baseball and he had a heart condition which any bottle containing ephedra says to not take it.

There's been both...

Hello small minded people. Currently, the FDA criteria for banning something is NOT based on the total number of deaths or complaints they recieve for it. It IS based on how many high profile deaths occur though. Basically if you have one dumb@ss football player dies one year, and then one dumb@ss baseball player dies the next year, that supplement will probably be banned (doesn't matter if the football player forgot to keep himself hydrated while training in intense heat, or that the baseball player disregarded warning about people with pre-existing cardiovascular issues).

That's the nice thing about the US government; it protects its people when they are too stupid to do so themselves (except in the case of cigarettes, or prescription drugs).

Maybe if OTC drugs would start paying off politicians they would not be banned

Ephedra is no worse than caffeine... stupid retards take massive amounts of it and have heart attacks... if you take 800mg of caffeine in 4 pills you'll have a heart attack too.

Now i gotta go stock up.

And no I don't use it to burn fat.

guess it's time to ban caffeine..what else ya got?

Cheese burgers and eggs should go as well since they are a major contributor to heart attacks....

Slippery slopes suck

WTF are you talking about? where is the slippery slope? Ephedra makes normal healthy people drop dead from heart attacks, it is a dangerous drug/supplement and it should be banned.

Actually OTC drugs and the supplement industry are regulated differently. I have no problem if the FDA required the supplement industry to have certain mandatory labeling, or age-restrictions on buying certain products, but banning supplements is sensationalism at its purest. I think more than a few members in this thread are living proof of that.

Unfortunately in the US, you must have the burden of proof. Where is your proof that one normal healthy individual using ephedra as directed died from a heart attack? And if you do find that one case, how many more identical cases are there? If one case was all it took, there would be thousands of banned items from the FDA each year.

Citrix, Tylenol, the flu shot and several other over the counter medicines kill many more normal healthy people than what ephedra is claimed to have. In fact, I have read several of the FDA's case studies and almost all of them could not difinitively link ephedra to the death.

BTW, do most of you realize that ephedra was already banned once, up until the mid 90s. The FDA could not support it's continued ban, and of course the Supplement Act came out, and ephedra was relegalized. The reason the FDA hasn't gone after is since is because there is no hard proof that ephedra is the cause of any of these deaths. Just speculation and conjecture.
